The difference is that, using Hansie as an example, he wasn't put in a position of trust to officially mentor and train young players after being identified as a common fraudster!
I find the 'shrugging off' of indefensible behavior such as this quite interesting when compared to one of the many cases we read about here on an almost daily basis where posters scream blue murder if an 'irregularity' directly affects their pockets!
In future you won't need to scratch your heads and wonder why the sport is crippled. There appear to be too many who are quite comfortable with unethical behavior and seem genuinely perplexed why the balance of the potential fan base (who have gone missing FOR EVER) are not prepared to fund and participate in this grubby behaviour.

Lets be honest IT is still happening today but maybe just more observable, or used to be, due to being able to see the Betting moves on the Internet almost in REAL time. Trainers do 'set up' a win as has been stated on this Site and I do not blame them. We have to be observant and take note of the Price fluctuations, not just a nibble but the Big Bucks. I agree that MOST of the betting moves do not come off, just look at the SP and see how many Horses that shortened actually won, very few. But where there is smoke there is usually fire so IMO this needs to factored in when evaluating these Horse's next 2 or 3 runs.
We slate Stephen Jupp but he ONLY rode to instructions to keep his job, what about the Trainers & Owners then.

Normally a bit banter along these lines on the show but considering his new position probably inappropriate.

Balls.... jocks like this already had a reputation and they rode for okes of a similar character....I also came from a training family in racing that had that schemer tag because the jocks used in the day were equally as notorious.....I cannot condone these practices but they happened aplenty and today the shrewdies still try pull moves but hitting them are far and few between. Everyone these days is a tryer because the game has become to tough to scheme. Those that try and get the schemes going are beaten by the bigger dogs that they discounted from a potential coup.
Every man for themselves..... and more likely to be beaten by a harder working woman....

Jackie Gorton was never in the top 10 in KZN when I was introduced to the game and did not have a big following with the punters.
Stephen Jupp was a good jockey who rode for a lot of other trainers, if he sat only on the Gorton few, he would have battled to put a few pennies together.
Sometimes things are said in an interview just to stir the pot.:S

Steven Jupp did what he was told to do in an age in which these things were the norm. By highlighting it , Steven Jupp is just telling the truth, describing another era. He is also quite obviously able to see if any appie is riding to win or not.
Today it is very difficult to give a horse a miss, compared to those days, for two reasons -
1)Stakes are better than in those years and the norm is to earn stakes as a priority.
2)You could get R20k onto a horse in the early 70's. You cannot get the equivalent on in today's values, just not the same bookies around. (Easier to steal the tot's turnover via the open bet)
3)Stipes have excellent video technology nowadays. ( what you see on TV is a far cry from what they see in the boardroom).

Yip LouisG...we want the truth...then kick the messenger in the teeth...
He's telling us like it happened....
we were all naive at some stage....
he was also caught between a rock and a hard place....( and bullshit to those that say that all racing is on merit...then why is a horse that is 80% ready entered....:S)
there were some notorious trainers, owners and bookies in those days...
I did not hear/watch the interview...but good stuff for Stephen Jupp...(tu)
There are a lot of good journeyman jockeys...trying to make it...don't begrudge them...

Nice bait Charles but we aint gonna Faull for it...would you rather Steven lied about the facts so as to preserve the "good" name of racing, my late dad had horses with Jackie Gorton (Summer Dream and Faro) in partnership with Jack O Sullivan and it was/is common knowledge that Jackie G was indeed a schemer so why take offense when the truth is revealed?? spade a spade bud, the days of treating the racing public like mushrooms is long gone.
On a lighter note Beau Art was in fact trained by Jackie Gorton and won a maiden for him at Clairwood before moving on to far bigger things with John Nicholson...
