Mr Jupp’s interview with James Goodman – Winning Ways
11 years 5 months ago
This letter is addressed to yourselves as the Board and Management of Phumelela and Gold Circle. The programme “Winning Ways” is broadcast on Tellytrack and I would therefore assume that you would take responsibility for its content.
During the current programme being broadcast, presenter James Goodman interviews Mr Stephen Jupp, who is currently employed by the NHRA as a Jockeys’ Academy Riding Master. Mr Jupp states that he was:
1. The top apprentice of the Transvaal in 1975-76 season.
2. The champion Johannesburg Jockey of 1979.
During the interview Mr Jupp informs Mr Goodman that he rode for, amongst others, a Mr Jackie Gorton, whom Mr Goodman then describes as ‘a schemer of note’. Mr Jupp then states that ‘…yes, he was a schemer of note, everything I rode was to run up for 6th place’, in other words, not trying.
Mr Jupp then states ‘…it was about a year before he said I could let one go’. At no point does Mr Goodman voice any disapproval of Mr Jupp’s complicity in this fraudulent behavior.
Clyde Basel has pointed out on numerous occasions that it is virtually impossible to find sponsors for the sport ‘outside of racing’ because of the perception that racing is ‘crooked’.
This interview unfortunately comes hard on the heels of 5 first-time-out winners in the space of one week in South Africa, all of whom started red-hot favourites. In 3 of the cases those of our customers, who happen to watch Tellytrack, were informed by the connections of the horses that they considered them to be ‘…extremely hard to beat, as long as they don’t run green’.
The fact that all price sensitive information is not made available to all customers from the moment the betting opens obviously is a form of institutionalized insider trading, which fuels the perception that racing is ‘crooked’.
I trust that in the light of the above no-one is surprised that the whole of our sport is impeached for want of integrity.
Our own racing channel is helping to spread this perception! Talk about shooting oneself in the foot!!
Your sincerely,
Charles Faull

Jupp also said he got fired in mauritius for not trying , but he said that
He actually was trying as he had punted the horse himself, he could not
produce the tickets as proof cos it was illegal for jockeys to punt

Is it a generation gap thing? in my Grandads and Fathers day a high % of working men liked a drink and a bet at the weekend. Now a days there is far more options for us to spend our leisure cash on,racing will never attract that back imo...
the generation gap will eventually get to wide

Cricket is even worse. Baseball and football not far behind. Horseracing, perceivedly, is much further behind. Just my opinion ...
Based on Faul's story above Jupp shld be booked not for what he said but for what he did...

I never watched the show, but if this is true then how could he still hold a position at the academy after this? Is this what the apprentices must learn about?

This is part of the character and colour of racing. If it is not squeaky clean enough for some, let them go somewhere else. Currency trading should do just fine

We all have plenty stories to tell over the years, most came unstuck and before we had sports betting we were on our own but cricket (hansie) plus soccer etc all have stories now

I too don't find an issue with this, some of these "shrewd" trainers actually were PUNTERS friends.
if a horse opened up 3/1 and drifted to 12/1 you sort of knew it was having a miss.
Now go look at the last 30 "shock" results and see if you can fathom out how those horses won.....and neither can the trainers of these
at least these guys knew what they were doing
I have my own way of looking at horses, certain trainers you can brass their horses based on a few factors and those factors are there for all to see
Dessie Edges for example with the gin....he is TELLING us its not fancied.
