coastal trainers ...
Looks like GC have driven the visitors away from Natal as they wanted,KZN racing will become a gaff...
tabnews.co.za/home/?p=37856
Nicci Garner: Multiple champion Cape trainer Mike Bass has brought 12 horses to Johannesburg for the Highveld spring and autumn racing seasons, including last year’s Gold Cup winner Jeppe’s Reef.
August 27, 2014
The horses, who will be in the care of trusted assistant trainer Robert Fayd’Herbe, arrived on Monday and have settled well into the self-contained barn reserved by Phumelela for visiting trainers.
Two, Global Express and new recruit Midnight Run, will make their Highveld debuts on the Vaal sand track in the August Stakes this Saturday. The others will be rolled out when they have fully acclimatised.
Fayd’Herbe said: “They travelled from Durban very well, ate up and seem relaxed and happy.
“Global Express and Midnight Run, who we’ve taken over from Garth Puller for the season, are prepping for the Emerald Cup and Saturday’s race will give us an indication of whether they are suited to the sand.”
Both horses are in fine form at the moment. Global Express took well to the Polytrack at Greyville last time out, beating Excelero over 1400m, while Midnight Run finished a good fourth behind Fly By Night in the Mercury Sprint at Clairwood last month.
Other horses in the raiding party include Mountain Master and talented filly Supreme Sunset, who finished fourth in the Gold Bracelet on Gold Cup Day.
“There are no huge names (apart from Jeppe’s Reef, who will go for the big stayers’ races) but it’s a competitive string of young, up-and-coming horses,” said Fayd’Herbe.
He said the Bass stable have been talking about opening a satellite base in Johannesburg for some time but relied on their yard in Durban, which has now been closed. “We decided to test the waters in Joburg, not only because the racing is better here at the moment but also to split horses up a bit so they don’t run against each other in Cape Town.”
Bass will have use of the barn until the end of the autumn racing season in May and the team might then apply for permanent stables, “though we’d need at least 20 boxes to make it viable”.
Bass is not the only visiting trainer this season because, according to Phumelela Racing Executive Patrick Davis, “We’re doing our best to accommodate the big coastal trainers to ensure our racing is as competitive as possible.”
So allocation has been made to accommodate Durban trainers Duncan Howells from next month until January and Robbie Hill from October to April. Vaughan Marshall will take over the boxes from Howells in January and Justin Snaith will open a permanent satellite yard at Turffontein in May.

For the 100+ time, GC did not drive away anyone. Where boxes are available anyone can come but bring your MR 76+ horses. We don't want to become the dumping ground for the lower rated horses which will take our racing down. We are trying to improve the quality of horses here and not become a second rate centre which is what will happen if all the bad maidens and low rated horses are sent here to make space for the better horses in the trainers home base.

Blondie, that's exactly why we want the higher rated horses here and not a trainers lower rated horses from another centre filling boxes with the type of horses that bring us down to a second rate centre. Please bring and stable your better horses here. Louis, thanks for the comments but on some things we will differ. We have our trainers AGM soon and one thing I will say right now is that we will not let our province become the dumping ground for another provinces bad horses. Help us improve our racing and we will welcome you with open arms(if boxes available) We will not allow(and we know this what will happen as we have been given a heads up about it) that say a trainer in the Cape has 120 horses and 100 boxes. Instead of getting rid of the 20 worst they want to send them to Kzn to put the overflow in our boxes. Why? Just get rid of them or send some of the better horses here and help us improve our standard of horses. Louis, if you check the stand alone meetings you will see that there is not much difference in the turnovers on the exotics. In the last few I checked it has shown that on some days the Jhb pick 6 might be bigger but the Kzn pa is bigger and vicer versa. The same with the Jp and bipot and this has been with the smaller fields on the Poly.

Craig if the cape trainers were to bring their higher rated horses you Durban trainers don't take them on because you guys are scared your ratings will go up hence the fields won't stand up.

how can you expect a trainer to set up a satellite yard in the off season nogal for 9 months of the year where it caters for maidens and low class racing and expect them to have 20 to 30 horses with ratings of 80 plus...how many yards in total have 30 horses with merit ratings of 80 plus anyway ...maybe our resident trainers on here could tell us how many horses in their yards are a net 80 plus...

Pirates I believe you are 100% correct, perhaps our resident trainers can tell us how many horses in their yard are an 80 plus, and what age they are?

Morning Pirates, about 6 months ago I took out all the horses nominated in CT over 2 meetings from the top 5 trainers who wanted satellite yards here and there were 57 different horses that qualified so they do have them. I am sure Bob that if they built boxes here they could race anything. The ruling was that they could not occupy GC boxes with horses that did not qualify but like Jhb can bring anything, so could they then do the same. Dean has asked for boxes and I hear he has undertaken to stick to the qualification criteria. I have been told that. I see at a quick glance there are 35+ horses
nominated for our next meeting that have mr's that would qualify and that does not include maidens.

The Kannemeyer yard will be a major quality booster for KZN.
