Box at Turffontein
10 years 8 months ago - 10 years 8 months ago
I know ABC has a box at the Big T. Could anyone tell me what the rental is for this for the year? A guy at the tattersals told me he has a box and that he is charged R60K a year? Sounds like he is exaggerating, people with financial prudence would surely not pay that for that part of town?

Dave with respect why would you hate your money so much to pay those rates for a front row seat to the rubbish dump on your left? Surely it would be much more convenient nevermind more pleasant in the swanky RA room? Or is this an ego thing no offence meant?

I only went once in the last year and it's basically Oscars box that we share.
It was a good idea at the time with the introduction of night racing and racing on an upswing was projected and it was not easy to obtain with a waiting list at the time.
My current venture with the pub makes it difficult to attend but is always a great vibe when we all get together.
I have thoughts of running a fun bus from the pub to track and getting some new guys involved in owning horses.
Maybe Johno might want to comment.

Pirates each to their own and again I say no disrespect by asking the question. My view is that if you dont race very often it makes no financial sense. Dave says he has only been once in a year, I believe the majority of box owners do not race much outside of the big days so financially it makes no sense. Much cheaper to rent a box on the day you want to race than own one outright. I suppose very similar to owning a property on the coast as a holiday home.

In the big scheme of Racing the cost of rental is less than the keep of any horse for a year - A Ferrari and a Toyota both serve the same purpose but if you can afford the Ferrari why ever not?

I don't respond a lot on this forum, but really Over the Air, "asked with respect". In that case, please stay away from comments like "who in their right minds", "ego thing" etc. I don't own a box, but can understand the people that do. A lot of owners are trainers by the way.

Just to pick up on one comment , you would battle to get a box on big race days and if not mistaken for the July there are boxes that are "trading" for almost the yearly rental for the cost of one day!
