A top trainer, years ago said it to me. We all train at Summerveld, we all feed the same food, we all use the same Vets, we all gallop Monday /Tuesday for races Sunday. What makes one horse win and another not? The horses natural ability. The biggest determining factor in racing by the proverbial mile.

absolutely CE, look at how many well bred horses that can't run even if trained by the top trainers, bought by the top agents and owned by the big owners.

Craig
What about the horse that has the potential and ability to run to a MR100. ... will the following be the same with every Trainer, for that horse -
1)total number of career wins.
2)total career earnings
3)lifespan of racing career

Craig, really not having a go at you here, as my stance on the subject is well documented.
But, honestly, all restrictions should go in Racing. It is utter rubbish. Horse racing is about the best horses winning. When we change that, we stuff racing up.
The Owners pay their keep. Some Owners wait years and years for a nice, competitive horse. The handicapper adds points for wins, the fields get stronger and costs rise. Now, when the Owner and the Trainer look for a race or some races over a period, the following applies -
Guaranteed local runners in PE keep him out over there.
Guaranteed local runners in Kimberley keep him out over there
Satellite yard rules in KZN keep him out over there...

As you wrote earlier, if a horse has no ability, it has no ability. So WHY keep it in Training ? And why "guarantee" it a run ? So what if MDK has more horses in Gauteng and so what if Marwing is opening a satellite yard or not ?

Maybe it is time to petition the Minister of Trade and Industry on this subject. The days of "protectionism" are supposed to be behind us ....
And Gauteng opens its doors to all. No restrictions. I can just imagine the volume of the bleating from KZN if they actually had a 7 month Season like we do in Gauteng, instead of their May, June, July Winter Season....

Louis, as I have stated before, if a horse is good enough, fed properly and kept sound, it will win 97% of races that it would have won anywhere. Look at who has won July's in the past. One July winner trained by a small/unfashionable trainer was washed at 5pm the afternoon before when the temperature was 8 degrees. It was out in the rain covered in soap and a hosepipe was being used to wash it! Our horses were in deep bedding with blankets on. It won the July the next day! Getting back to the satellite yards and so called restrictions. This is the last time I am going to repeat myself on this subject. As James G posted awhile ago "there are no boxes" what cannot people not understand about that? That is the problem. When I had Thandolwami a few years back, I applied to Jhb for 6 boxes when he was going for the Charity mile and Summer cup. I was told no boxes. He went up to and back twice in 4 weeks. I did not bake a big scene about it. There were no boxes! Finish and klaar. I was told the same when I applied for boxes for the Cape season with him. No boxes. The restrictions that people keep worrying about and completely misunderstand. Anyone can bring any horse they want and race in any race as long as they are not using GC boxes. Joey, Mike etc can get stables and tracks somewhere and they can race here but there are no boxes available from GC. Louis, you can bring any horse you want from Jhb and if it gets into the race, you can race it. The DTI and any court will throw out any challenge with contempt and costs probably as there is no protectionism, just no boxes! Must GC go and spend more money building boxes for every Tom, Dick and Harry that suddenly wants a satellite yard here? Don't be silly. If the trainer is so desperate to race in Kzn, then he can build his own stables, tracks etc and race whenever he wants. Easy.

Craig...are there any restrictions as to who can train at Summerveld ? ie does a horse need to be stabled at GC's Summerveld complex in order to be allowed to train on the tracks...

The reason I'm asking is because if the 'out of town' trainers were/are so keen to race here and there are no boxes available then why don't they buy one of the numerous private properties in the Summerveld area then just walk their horses down to the track in the morning and walk them back afterwards....that would get round the 'no boxes' issue...?

Rob, I think there are about 4 properties that have the right to use the tracks and pay for that. I think I am right in saying that 3/4 are already being used. MDK, Govender and Cuhna have horses coming in from off limits as they call it.

the restrictions are that maidens and all horse with a MERIT RATING OF 78 AND BELOW ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RACE IN NATAL..this has been around for a couple of years now therefore the bass ramsden kanemeyer and alec laird satellite yards were closed down..these yards were closed down when clairwood was open it has sweet fcukal got to with stable availability..lets not mask the real issue at stake here
