Mr.H is 100% correct on both points.
Biltong, whilst appearing quite simple to make , depends on various things, most important being the cut and the spices. Whist the run of the mill biltong is plentiful, there are some of us saffers who are very particular about the quality of the meat, the cut, the soaking and process etc. This biltong is amazing stuff.
Wors also. Can't make any for Mr.H, but will make some for Senor Santa when he is next out..... And he can report back...

go on this site bob and place your order. There was a South African shop in Edinburgh where I used to get a few sods and bobs but unfortunately not enough business so they shut it down

Mr H, we will have to meet. I can't stand the fatty, chewy, vile muck
I have not eaten sh1t Bob but for me it is worse than it looks! Though, in fairness, I can't promise that if I were to taste the top grade stuff referred to by LG I would say the same. Can get a very good steak in SA though... not as good as Argentina of course but not damn bad. And before you all get on your high horses lol, of course a SA steak is a million times better than a British one. Ok?

Biltong is delish and what my old mom calls "more-ish". Once you start you can't stop. Anyone know a good place in Pietermaritzburg to get it? I'm going down there tomorrow.
Droewors (dried sausage for some of the Clan) is also potentially great but usually such a dumping ground for all the rubbish in the factory especially fat. Ends up tasting like ground-up rubbish dump.
But the best, the very best! is smoked fish ... done by yourself not bought. My brother-in-law made some on the farm, fish he'd caught himself, and I couldn't believe it was the same thing as the tastless, rubbery rubbish I'd bought in various shops. Oh my friends and countrymen, my taste buds did stand up and sing the Halleluya Chorus ...

Mavourneen, best place is the Caltex garage as you drive into Jan Smuts avenue in Winston Park, 2nd best is the Lowlands butchery in Mooi River and 3rd the Ashburton butchery in Ashburton. Caltex biltong comes from Kokstad and is the best I have ever eaten.

Lion Lager has been relaunched but only for this Xmas period. I think Dave would know more.

Englander anywhere in the world you will find a steak far superior to what you get in Britain and at half the price (unless you buy from Costco). If you buy steak from any of the national supermarkets you have to adjust your shopping list as the price of steak is extortionate. If you want to eat out and have a steak then a loan at the bank is required.

In Cape Town there is a steak house between Rondebosch and Newlands on the Main Road on the left hand side going toward Newlands, the best steaks in the Southern Suburbs. Cant remember the name but jeez they were good. (often went there after a session at Forries )

Bob, I apologize for being so forward but are you a biltong virgin?
if so, can we get some to you?
Biltong is cured meat, much the same as parma ham or something. The Dutch, upon landing in their groups in the 1660's etc and having to trek up into uncharted geographies, made sure they had protein stacked that wouldn't spoil (ha! -no fridges those years...nor cooler bags).
