The Playing Fields
10 years 2 months ago
If my friend Derek and I each had R1000 to :
buy lotto tickets
play at the casino
take sports bets
save at a bank
We would both face nearly identical odds of winning or losing and earn similar rates at the bank.
However, if my friend was a well known racing manager and we both bet on the horses, what would my odds of winning be compared to his???
Should I and my other friend Sipho who spends his days at the dingy tote in Mokopane, continue to feed the pools for others, knowing full well that we have a distinct handicap??
At what level does horse racing become a decent proposition for the average gambler?
Simple question ...are the playing field level?

Sealegs by having access to this site with info from trainers ,owners , punters who study form and informed punters on the day you have a distinct advantage over the average punter in the tote . The biggest question then is only when to follow or who to follow ....

Sealegs, I can agree with your sentiment but if life was fair we would all start out rich and die with very little. As you know the reality is anything but.
We should never forget though that gambling is a choice but that acquiring skill is a much harder earned choice. The benefits will however mostly outweigh the pain if you are a gambler at heart.
If you are going to gamble then do so with your mind and not your heart and give yourself every chance of success by having an economical game plan.
I agree that more affluent players have an advantage but if you limit your exposure and manage your odds the less affluent player can still have a lot of success.
Just don't ever believe that you will get rich from a gambling involvement as the games have not been designed for us to profit on a regular basis.

My bigger losses have come from inside information. I doubt that any racing manager has profited over the long term, in fact it could be detrimental as the loyalty factor must surely blind you to the dangers in the field

.....yes big misconception about the so called inside information....truly blinds one to casting an eye over the others in a particular race that are going for the same prize.....then again I shake my head when I read some of the fancies some people post.....most have no clue at all....so the playing fields are pretty much the same for all.....I know some very connected people that have punted themselves into the poor house because inside info has put them there......

In Racing's heyday there was almost no information - Now you have masses of info yet the game has less players - The basics of good draws, breeding, current form etc have not changed one bit so the only info that the punter needs is any circumstance that could either improve or disadvantage a horse. It amazes me to see punters ignoring the draw bias week in and out - I cannot tell you how often I hear horse A will never lose and lose he does from a bad draw or something obvious in the form book. The Handicappers are no fools and looking at their ratings is far easier than listening to everyman and his donkey giving out the GRAFT! I regard much of Racing's Rumor mill as the Courts do with Hearsay Evidence - Not worth considering UNLESS I have proof in the form book to back it up.
I always say if setting up a horse was so easy then why would any trainer worth his salt have owners? He could just buy for himself and set them up as he liked - Racing is perhaps 70% skill and 30% luck - If you neglect the 70% you will soon find the 30% becomes 50% and you are OUT
