Nice to see the passion coming through and lovely topic Bob
Even if we agree to disagree on this the operator must be given some credit as they do maximise pools for the benefit of the majority of players.
A R1m carry over in Kimberley will probably yield a follow up pool of R2 to R2.5 million which is really good but the same carry over in Gauteng will probably result in a R3.5m to R4.5m pool. Clearly there are benefits for both the operator and punters under this scenario. Further to this I am sure that a Kimberley pool will not have 10% local contributions so the money is essentially made up of bigger contributions from punters in other areas.
Also a carry over is really a bonus as we got the results wrong and are now getting a second chance to get some back but not many people can play on a Monday due to work commitments which makes it less than optimal as a carry over event.
The operator has got this pretty much right with the only negative for us being that there is no set formula applied that will make it possible to predict the exact future allocations.

Are we sure they MAXIMISE pools?
Have we ever had a satisfactory answer to exactly what happens to the millions that are generated by the "rounding down" of dividends? That money could well be defined as carry over!

why did they close down other courses because they were not profitable...but they now "subsidise" other centres...?
Is this not out dated? i know when we first started this forum their was a heavy bias on the forum to certain centres , guys wouldnt punt on anything but "their own" region or where they knew about.. surely with how popular the internet etc has got this arguement is archaic?

Pretty sure they are looking to maximise pools as local racing depends purely on turnover in the absence of customer growth.
Rounding is a reality but with the product that we developed we had to build this into the dividend calculations as part of the required product paperwork and I can assure you that any benefit for the operator is really no big money spinner.

LSU, I beg to differ with your statement that rounding down is not significant .........bearing in mind we are talking every single bet type and there is no rounding up to balance the books.

I like Vee Moodley's response " I allocate/split where necessary". So, Vee himself, is the policy

Plus...if it is transparent...then I should be able to work out where the next carryover, and how much...is going....

IMO...and this is what the operators fail to comprehend...If I bet at Fairview...it is because I perceive that I can make some money betting in a large field...R4,00 place payouts are not un-common
How in the hell can I make some money in a 5 horse field where the 50/1 outsider is paying R22 for a win on the Tote...
