I feel that Jayyed is in this class - If he was as good as people think then De Kock would have won multiple Graded races with him as that is the stable's job. I doubt if that horse could beat Majmu over any distance getting weight. Look further at Amazing Strike who finished .40 behind Jayyed in the KRA - those two HOLD form as they finished a head apart in the Dingaans - French Navy beat both in that race by almost 10 lengths and we know 1800-2200m is his best trip. I think if you wabt to back a 3yr old you must go for a first 5 finisher in the TCrown as history proves they do well in this race - I will not back the Conglomerate either as I do not think he is as good as the Gauteng runners. The 3yr old fillies have a huge chance and 33-1 on Siren's Call is perhaps a more sensible bet than Jayyed.

Mr H, I cant argue with your logic here.

Neither can I, except to point out that French Navy was beaten fair and square by Legal Eagle in the Derby......

That's part of the reason I'm backing him - What MR would FN be if he won two of the three legs and run third in the other? I'm happy that he did not (he ran in all three legs of the TC while LEagle did not - You see this happening year after year in the USA TC where the last leg is won by a horse that has missed out on the other two legs -)

To me it did seem as if FN did not quite get home in the Derby, so the 2200 imo is going to be a bit of a stretch - and this year I think somebody will make sure it is a true run race - still at current odds I also prefer him to the likes of Jayyed, who still needs to get into the race - can't see FN beating Legal Eagle though.

Good thread, in my opinion the three yr old fillies better crop than their male counterparts. The 3 yr old colts will be outgunned by the older horses this year. I unhappy Legislate did not get acrun recently, and of course Futura looks the real deal.
Wylie Hall looks a real contender for the July.

I agree with you Magi, but all three horses you mention here have had injury problems , Legislate has already been ruled out (although not scratched ) by connections.

I think the name of this thread is apt, we don't know just how deep the rabbit hole goes.. Quoting Delpech, he said Jayyed was their best 3year old b4 the problem, as I mentioned b4, if u look at ertijaal and majmu then how good is jayyed, sure majmu probably improved since AD's last assessment, though MDK wouldn't throw a maiden in a grade 1 race if he didn't think he was up for it.. Talks of dubai b4 he even won a race, just all shows the expectations around the horse.. 100% sure MDK would have aimed Jayyed at the triple crown If not for the problem and we'd be singing a different tune, either discounting its chances or putting him up there with FN, Ertijaal and LE etc.. The stable back him and there is talks from Matthew of him now "fulfilling his promise", which can either mean Dubai or staying in SA for the july, its all good enough for me to take some of that 100/1 as the Reward slightly outweigh the Risk.. But needs to show it on the track on friday.. :)

Some excellent points made by all parties, I for one support the stable and Delpech but I will have to wait till the race is run on Friday to make my mind up on Jayyed only time will tell.

Gentlemen, this is what the July (and other biggies) are about for me..

Its all about the build up. Finding a horse 2/3 months before the big one, at a real decent price and backing your gut, instinct and hope that he/she will make the final field. Just having a ticket at a big price, of a horse that is now part of the final field is where my thrill comes from. If it runs in, I usually pass out and wake up the next day. If it doesnt, I still had a blast and feel like a winner (consoling myself here). I did that for Bold Silvano, and also Sushisan. It paid off!

Those that didnt pay off was Rumya (J&B Met) and Icy Air some years back.

Thats the essence and fun of the VDJ (for me) B)
