Final objection thoughts ?
9 years 11 months ago
Did the outcry after last years objection play a part in today's decision ? I think they were shit scared to change the result for the second year running.
I was surprised that Randolph made no attempt to change the whip to his left hand. I thought it should have been upheld. Had it been a Maiden Plate I know it would have been.

The course configuration this year left much to be desired and from the pics Scotia posted the camber downhill to the outside is clearly visible. Too much scrimmaging and looking for openings into the straight and IMO this will be detrimental to the event as it was evident that not too many were risking injury the likes of Whylie Hall etc.
Compare to last year where Whylie set the pace and Legislate followed this year was a lot untidier.

Not sure they got it right, but was a tricky decision.. I`ve seen less interference being acted on though

A number of horses had their running taken up by others scrimmaging. And 1/2 the field really had no where to go in the last 200m. Very annoying seeing your fancy having to check in and out and never get a run. The July has always been a bit like that but every feature in this province seems determined more by luck or draw bias rather than primarily merit this season.
The objection was overruled because it was clear that Puntas made contact with Power King which unbalanced Power King who then bumped Puntas while regaining balance. It looked worse because PK had moved a long way off straight initially. The Actual contact was because Puntas also shifted across and was at fault for the first contact. Also despite the contact it seemed to have little effect on the result. At least that's how I saw it.

That is exactly how I saw it as well

In my opinion power king was in front at the time and going better then the 2nd horse, if power king never ducked in he would have won easier.

I would add never seen a horse so shattered after the race than the winner certainly gave it's all

I have now just watched the race for the first time......Here is my opinions:
Power King came through in the middle of the pack and shifted all the way to the outside. Punta Arenas kept a relative straight course up the outside rail just as he had done in the Cup Trial.....
The initial contact was made by Punta Arenas but it was so slight it was almost negligible. The 2nd contact was much more severe and this was indeed caused by the eventual winner. He knocked himself into PA and caused himself to lose balance behind but also caused PA to drop it's stride.
Personally I think whether the 2nd would have beaten the first has no bearing if we take into account last years decision. The contact last year was much lighter and both horses carried each other in and out almost the same amount. This year the contact was severe and Power king shifted about 10 lanes outward but they overruled the objection. It makes no sense to me BASED ON LAST YEAR'S DECISION.
I know, I know, each incident has to be judged on its merits and last year was not the same as this year but I find it highly irregular that last year was upheld and this year not.
I think the race was terrible and there were too many hard luck stories. I think this track is not conducive to fair racing.......
Futura was given a very easy ride and I think they knew what they were up against with the steadier of 60kg's. He will get easier pickings and I still think he is the best horse in the country!
Well done to MR. H for telling me 2 years ago that he thought Power King could win a big one!!!! Kudos sir, you were absolutely correct!!
I wasn't able to enjoy the races due to work but I think the race was disappointing.
Hope all the horses made it out in good order!

No one mentioning the fact the Power King probably cost legal Eagle the race, caused interfence to about 6 horses and the only reason PA bumped PK was because PK had moved from the middle of the track to the wide outside and crossed PA

I spoke to someone who spoke to Ian as he walked out the objection and he said he said that he didn't expect to get it as PA actually starts the resultant bump by brushing PK 1st and that caused him to lose his balance slightly and his off hind slips and he bumps PA. General opinion is that PA had had enough chance to go past PK but it looked like he was holding him there. Last year was only a short head whereas this year was not that close.
