Canadian International
Moore stars once again with Grade 1 double
By Peter Scargill 7:07AM 19 OCT 2015
Report: Canada, Sunday
Woodbine: Pattison Canadian International Stakes (Grade 1) 1m4f, 3yo+ turf
RYAN MOORE won himself even more international fans with a brilliant Grade 1 double at Woodbine headed by his historic third consecutive victory in the Canadian International, this time on Cannock Chase (Sir Michael Stoute).
No jockey had triumphed in three successive runnings of the $1 million (£500,600) contest, but Moore produced Cannock Chase with a perfectly timed surged in the home straight to catch Up With The Birds to add to his previous wins with Hillstar last year and Joshua Tree in 2013.
"I'm very lucky. I get to ride very good horses," said Moore after he has secured his record-breaking win. "It worked out well today. I thought this horse was impressive. As soon as he got a bit of room, he quickened and he won easy."
Moore kept Cannock Chase out of trouble towards the rear of the field for much of the race with last year's Grade 1 Northern Dancer winner Sheikhzayedroad (David Simcock/Martin Lane) one of the few behind him after a tardy start.
Rounding the turn for home, Up With The Birds (Graham Motion) managed to win the battle for the lead and kicked on under John Velazquez but they had no answer when Cannock Chase emerged from the pack. Sheikhzayedroad ran on for third while Second Step could only manage ninth of the 11 runners.
'He's the best'
"He had a good turn of foot today and he's a good horse at this distance," said Bruce Raymond, racing manager for Rabbah Bloodstock, representatives for owner Saeed Suhail. "The owner picked him out at Newmarket [yearling sales] for £400,000 and it was a good buy. Ryan Moore, he's the best. We're lucky to have him."
Velazquez offered no excuses for the second home and said: "I had a perfect trip. He tipped out and he was running so well that I thought they're really going to have to run hard to beat him. He was absolutely rolling down the lane. He ran so well today."
Martin Lane, won completed a one-three for Rabbah Bloodstock horses on Sheikhzayedroad, said: "I had a wall of horses in front of me going around the bend so I had to switch wide, which is never ideal, but he galloped all the way to the line. He was game, as he always is. He ran a very good race. With a bit further, we might have got second but looking at the winner, that's the best we could have done on the day."
Also on Sunday
Woodbine: E.P. Taylor Stakes (Grade 1) 1m2f, 3yo+ fillies & mares, turf
CURVY (David Wachman) initiated a Grade 1 double for Ryan Moore with a brave win from fellow European Talmada (Roger Varian/William Buick).
Moore sat in the second half of the field on the Ribblesdale Stakes winner before moving up to challenge in the home stretch, where Curvy had to be brave to squeeze between two rivals.
Once in the clear Curvy galloped on strongly in Sue Magnier's dark blue silks to take victory in this $500,000 (£250,238) contest.
Ground the key
Curvy had disappointed on a previous visit to North America in the Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont earlier this month, but the soft ground in New York was blamed for that defeat by Moore.
He said: "She'd won a Group 2 at Royal Ascot but the ground at Belmont was too soft for her.
"She has been a very impressive filly. She started the season off in handicaps and she has just progressed. She has kept on improving."

Couldn't agree more Budgie, unlike certain biased Moore supporters on this forum, we can give opinions from a neutral standpoint

We are realists and say it how it is. You guys still talk about one fantastic ride in one race whereas there won't be enough bandwidth to post all of Moores great rides
