Blatant tote manipulation
9 years 2 months ago - 9 years 2 months ago
I have just watched the replays from yesterdays Greyville meeting. On two separate occasions Craig Peters comments on how the win tote dividends have significantly changed AFTER the race is run. On both occasions this takes place at least 2 minutes after the race has been closed for betting. I find this unacceptable and can only surmise that once again the lifeblood of racing, the punters, are getting a raw deal. The horses concerned are B twentyone and Captain Sparrow.

Most of the time just before the off, alot of money is bet on the tote (Pari-mutuel) betting hence the fluctuations.
B Twentyone - Starting Price = 13/10 returned R1.80 on the Tote
Captain Sparrow - Starting Price = 18/10 returned R3.00 on the Tote

Naresh I am with you brother and expect some fluctuation to occur in the 20 seconds after the jump. I do not expect the race to have run and after the race has been called the commentator calls the winner and tote div. Then a minute or so later mentions the reduction in price. Remember this is at least 2 minutes after the last bet should have been in the system.

i have to say that what you are describe is pretty normal for many totes across the world (AUS, HK, Singapore). it is pretty much caused by a late surge of money which naresh alludes to

The point ,for me ,here is merely confirmation that anybody who has win/place bets on the tote has no understanding of bet value............can't imagine placing a bet with, not only the obvious unknown of "will it win"..................but then the very avoidable "what will I get if it does?"
(Eg I was convinced that one of Driers horse would win the last (and slightly preferred the 2nd horse) I dutched them for a profit ................imagine trying that on the tote!)

......was a victim of this earlier in the day both Hong Kong and co-mingled Singapore bets
......backed a horse EW and it won the payouts were at least 25% lower than what was on the race closed screen.....I just give up with them.....taking a sabbatical from racing.....it is beginning to irritate the crap out of me.....delayed or no streaming.....then tote manipulation and more scheming......

muhtiman, you are right to be pissed about the HK, SG totes because there are no fixed odds and you are up against the big players (bill benter's syndicate, citibet...etc) who bet amounts in the 7 digits in those races. in australia when we see the totes smashed post-race we say 'the robots have won', referring to the secretive betting syndicates that eat up the value in the totes and exotics.
tote and exotic betting is truly dead in AUS because of this

Is the problem not a lot to do with the pool size ? And the fact that a few $ can kill a pool price ?

has it been suggested to the powers that b, to close the pool 2min before the off time. This will also improve the loading time otherwise the tote will loose money if they delay longer than the official off

About a minute before the Drum Star race, Deez mentioned that Master Switch was paying like R7 against the bookie's price of about 7/2. I rushed to cancel my Interbet request so that I could punt on the tote - something which I haven't done in decades. I also know that there would have been a hundred other Mac's doing the same thing. Well, not only did the tote forecast dividend quickly settle to parity but my Interbet request failed to cancel and Master Switch lost. My real point is that if it is too good to be true on the tote then it probably is.
