APPRENTICE CALVIN NGCOBO SUSPENDED
At an Inquiry held at its Head Office at Turffontein Racecourse, on 4 May 2016, apprentice Jockey Mr Calvin Ngcobo, who was accompanied by his Riding Master, Mr G Waterston, was charged with a contravention of Rule 77.1.1, read in conjunction with Rule 77.2.9, in that a urine sample taken from him at the Greyville Racecourse on 19 February 2016, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Oxazepam and Temazepam, which are banned substances in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.
Mr Ngcobo pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of the charge.
After considering all the facts relevant to this matter and the co-operative manner in which Mr Ngcobo approached the inquiry proceedings, the Board imposed a penalty of a suspension from riding in races for a period of 14 days.
Mr Ngcobo has waived his right of appeal and was granted permission to take his suspension from 10 May to 23 May 2016, both days inclusive.

Time and time again jockeys will never learn, from rags to riches, drink drugs and you name it,there only may be 10 of them that have there heads on the right way and those are the successful jockeys.

Drink is very addictive for people.
Jocks should be given life skills rather than being punished.

We should know the facts before labelling them alcoholics, my friend Damien Oliver failed an alcohol test in Oz. He had his last G&T at about 1am and was tested 11 hours later but still was above the limit. I know this does not justify his actions but I know Damien personally and he is by no means an Alkie!!

I think it's about responsibility knowing when to drink and stop,as we know how dangerous the job of a jockey is and to make it more dangerous for the others as well.

Don't think that this has anything to do with being an alcoholic or drinking for that matter. It's about how professional you are as a rider and whether you take your responsibilities towards an owner and trainer seriously.
What you do in your spare time is and always should be your own business but if it potentially affects your ability or impairs your judgement or endangers your mount or other riders you are reputationally and perhaps even physically on the road to ruin.
Should have a long hard look at yourself if you are still measuring over many hours after having a good time.

In most organizations, coming under influence of alcohol to work gets counseling coupled with a final written warning there after within a period of one year if same offence then dismissal.... I don't think same Will apply in horseracing!
