Nightingale - a better filly?
Mac, if we are to answer your question on what has been achieved to date, then it is fair to say Silver Mountain is the better of the two. If one looks back to all Silver Mountains runs where Van Niekerk had a ride in the very same races, hard to believe he would have freely chosen to sit on a 50/1 shot versus a 15/20 favourite, a 14/1 shot versus a 14/10 favourite, and so, but you get the gist.
Maybe with time Nightingale may prove to be the better filly, let's wait and see.
I can't speak as to why BF is riding Silver Mountain tonight, but the reason Domeyer rode SM 1st time out is because GVN was suspended.GVN agreed that Domeyer could keep the ride after the debut run.
GVN and Domeyer are best mates, but GVN has picked up plenty stick from the other jocks as a result of this decision as they keep telling him he's no 'judge',and it's a decision that has haunted him to a degree since then.

Great thread guys!! Bayern, I like your thinking as regards Muwaary. Also imo the way he runs the short Greyville straight may suit. Will put in small Patent.....

Thanks for clearing that up. I remember how happy he was when winning his first Grade 1 aboard Inara (I am open to correction on this), imagine how much happier he would have been if he had taken the decision to ride Silver Mountain. And here I thought jockeys were in the business to ride winners, especially Grade 1 winners. Some jockeys become famous because of that one horse, maybe Van Niekerk needs to visit a head-shrink.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

For our sake, let's hope Muwaary reads this thread, I think he is a smart horse :silly:

I think it was less of a conscious decision on GVN part and more just a case of how the chips fell.
When multiple jocks are riding work for one stable(unusual as that is Bass is very lucky that way)each has to be given rides.GVN is essentially the stable jock, but Domeyer has a close association with the stable since long before he even went to the academy so in this instance the chips fell his way.
Felix Coetzee must have had many a nightmare when he had to pick and Mark Sutherland landed up on the 'right one',it's just the nature of the game.

9 years 1 month agousually run on the first Saturday in may but whoever does the program has zero respect for tradition so chops and changes distances, names ,tracks and conditions for feature races depending how they feelBob Brogan wrote: Are these races usually run on a friday?

Talking about program changes, the 2yo races on July Day are now Grade 2 Races. On Gold Cup Day, there are 2yo races over 1200m (Grade 2) and 1600m races (Grade 1) for both sexes.
In the 1990's, they had a 2yo feature race at Clairwood over 1800m, 2 weeks after the July Day. That race was won by a future July winner, Dancing Duel.
