Durbanville Sunday 9/10

The event provides part of the entertainment, and raises much-needed funds for the Western Cape Equine Trust, on the same day as the running of the Matchem Stakes and Diana Stakes.

In years gone by this event has gone the way of jockey Aldo Domeyer but a change in conditions sees it revert from the usual 100m dash to the new 400m distance. Racing. It’s A Rush examines the chances of this year’s field:

Aldo Domeyer (sponsored by Plattner Racing)
Showed plenty of toe last year but is untried over this distance and a question mark remains. Stable comments that ‘class should prevail’ but is wary of the threat posed by younger runners.

Anthony Andrews (sponsored by Sorrento Stud)
Was in the shake up in the 2015 edition and could feature at the top of the boards for this year’s renewal. Another of the tried and tested brigade.

Brandon May (sponsored by Hassen Adams)
One of three 20-year-olds in the race, apprentice May makes appeal based on the fact that he receives weight from a number of other runners. Might be a worthy inclusion in the backend of quartets.

Corne Orffer (sponsored by Ian Longmore)
The dark horse possible of causing an upset but perhaps more effective over the shorter trip.

Craig Bantam (sponsored by Marshall Racing)
Another of the fancied runners and cannot be left out of any permutations. Has a decent turn of foot and will ask the right questions of the favourite. Leave him out at your peril.

Donovan Dillon (sponsored by Crabbia Racing)
One of the young guns but has been around the block. Could enjoy this trip and likes to race midfield and come at them from off the pace

Grant Behr (sponsored by Michelle Rix)
Another serious contender for bragging rights and could find the trip to his liking based on pedigree. A course specialist and should be in the shake-up in the closing stages.

Grant van Niekerk (sponsored by Etienne Braun)
Has a tendency to lose ground at the start but flew up late last time out and provided a late challenge down the outside of the track. All depends how he comes out of the gates but is a capable entrant.

Heavelon van der Hoven (sponsored by Woodhill Stud)
The fact that Heavelon has shared articles around the Olympics on his Facebook page means that he must be considered as an outsider capable of asking questions of the fancied runners. Might be a more effective over further.

Lucian Africa (sponsored by Chrigor Stud / Mrs S Hattingh)
At the age of 29, Lucian will want to send a strong message to the younger generation that he is a force to be reckoned with in the Jockey’s Chase

Oswald Noach
One of the hardest workers around and will be cherry ripe for this. While not completely out of it there is appeal for other runners.

Ralton Peters (sponsored by NHRA)
Zim import looking to stamp his authority on the Cape racing scene. One of the unknown quantities.

Shadlee Fortune (sponsored by Gavin Almanza)
Another of the younger generation trying to prove their worth against the seasoned campaigners. Closely related to the defending champion so on pedigree must have a chance.

Sihle Cele (sponsored by Peter de Beyer)
Found interference in last year’s race and that hampered any chance he had in the dash. Will be looking to steer clear of any traffic problems

Xavier Carstens (sponsored by Sands Grooms Racing Trust)
Draw won’t be a factor for this runner but could have his work cut out for him as the race unfolds. Ran over a distance way too short for him last time out.

MJ Byleveld
Hasn’t got the soundest of legs so question marks remain over his ability to cause what would be an almighty upset. May need the run to bring him on.

Akshay Balloo (sponsored by Hugo Hattingh / Tripple H Trust)
Another imported runner. Having his first start at this track so that could be a factor but could very well be in the shake-up

Trainers’ comments on first timers running at Durbanville on Sunday:
October 7, 2016

JUSTIN SNAITH:
Race 1 – TIFFINDELL (11): Will need the run.
Race 2 – ATHINA MADERA (8): Will be scratched.
Race 9 – MUTHAIGA CLUB (11): From the bad draw the instruction to the jockey will be to drop right out to last. He is a very nice horse and I am hoping he will run on well – he could make an eye catching debut and might be worth including in the back end of the Quartet.

GLEN KOTZEN:
Race 1 – LEA’S DAUGHTER (5): She has ability and is the half-sister to Rodney! She is drawn 9 and will need luck from there on debut.

GREG ENNION:
Race 1 – OAKLEY COURT (8): Nice filly but will need the run and the experience – could sneak into the back end of the Quartet.
Race 2 – OOPS A DAISY (11): Nice filly but will need the run and the experience – could sneak into the back end of the Quartet.

BRETT CRAWFORD:
Race 1 – SEATTLE SILVA (9): Will need the run.

PATRICK KRUYER:
Race 9 – MTOROSHANGA (10): Shows nice work at home but will find it nearly impossible from the draw.

I think A Time To Kill in the 6th is the one to beat. See it opened 6/1 at Hollywood and shortened into 7/2, 6/1 still available at Betting World if you fancy this one.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.
