FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT of the 2017 CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE sponsored for the first time by TRACK AND BALL

The 2017 Track And Ball Charity Turf Challenge kicks off on The Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes Day, Sunday 7 May, and finishes on eLan Gold Cup Day, “Super Saturday”, 29 July.

The Charity Turf Challenge worth R100 000 to the winning entry is an exciting competition that offers fans of the sport of horseracing a unique opportunity to test their skill – after all, racing is the “Intelligent Bet!”

The aim of the Charity Turf Challenge is to select a team of 10 horses you feel are most likely to score points during the official period of the Champions Season. A list of all the Graded races will be provided and whilst the emphasis remains on these feature races run in KZN, ALL winners throughout the country will be eligible to earn points. The points breakdown can be found below:

Grade 1 Races:

1st place 20 points

2nd place 14 points

3rd place 10 points

Grade 2 Races:

1st place 14 points

2nd place 9 points

3rd place 6 points

Grade 3 Races:

1st place 9 points

2nd place 5 points

3rd place 3 points

Listed Races:

1st place 2 points

All other Races:

1st place 1 point

Bonus Points: the following are eligible for 5 bonus points:

a) Bonus Races - the winners of the following races:

Tsogo Sun Sprint - 1200m (27 May at Scottsville Racecourse)

The Rising Sun Gold Challenge - 1600m (10 June at Greyville Racecourse)

Vodacom Durban July - 2200m (01 July at Greyville Racecourse)

eLan Gold Cup - 3200m (29 July at Greyville Racecourse) **now Gr.3**

b) Long Shots - any winner whose official Tote win payout exceeds R15

Points will be scored on the FINAL result (all clear to pay) posted on SAFTOTE.

Racing South Africa, the competition host, will provide a list of horses that are thought to be campaigning in KZN during Champions Season. Only horses from this list are eligible.

The list is expected to be available by Wednesday 12 April which will give entrants just less than four weeks to do their homework. To the best of its knowledge, Racing South Africa will attempt to keep players informed of horses that are NOT participating for whatever reason.

In addition to the FREE BONUS entry for every 5 entries submitted for ONLINE users (sixth entry is free), our new title sponsor, Track And Ball, is offering their online account holders a betting credit worth up to R200 when entering the competition. In other words, for every entry up to 4 entries, their account will be credited by R50! New customers will also receive the same benefit. For more information about this promotion, please contact the Track And Ball team directly on: 031 314 1969

Apart from the grand prize of R100 000, there is also the very popular stand-alone prize of R20 000 for the entry that earns the most points on Vodacom Durban July Day only.

Tab Gold is again kindly sponsoring R10 000 worth of betting vouchers for the ever-popular weekly draw and the African Horse Sickness Trust is again the beneficiary.

For me it will sadly never be quite the same - no Clairwood, that narrow Greyville straight - depressing :(

I feel the same way, I drive past old clairwood every morning and it depresses me to see it being dug up nevertheless I always get excited for the KZN Season. I think this year is going to be a cracker especially when it seems the CAPE horses are being saved for the KZN Season.

I usually have my entries in the bin when after the closing it is announced that a few of my selections are not taking place.

It would be nice to see them doing a little homework this year and finding out from the trainers with the top horses what routes they are planning on taking.

The "charity" turf challenge run by Racing SA. Who exactly is Racing SA and what is their mandate? If you go to their website they have pictures of their 2008 board. I vaguely seem to recall that this was shut down and Deez lost his job recently, so what and who are these guys exactly?

www.racingsouthafrica.co.za/view_page.aspx?ID=63

I see nothing about beneficiaries and handouts from previous years competitions. There is a mention of African Horse Sickness Trust being the beneficiary, if this is the sole beneficiary this is not charity its fundraising. Who gets the money, how much money is used for charity, and who gets the balance?
