Race 4 Turffontein update
7 years 6 months ago
After race 4 we spoke to Chris Van Niekerk about cold blood mess up,, punters were irate,, he said he would look into it,, hopefully we will get feedback and explanation,, they can have Indabas all day to build the game but these type of incidents break down customer relations,, a well known big punter who burned 15k o jackpots approached stipes and was fobbed off,, we reapproached the stipe about his comment to the punter and he said he would respond in writing,, we don't want the stipes report we want him to repeat and justify what he said to the hard done by punter

Yup the operator or the RA should demand an inquiry

What can Chris van Niekerk do about it? If he is able to do something it will show that everything said about him, Jooste and others controlling horse racing is true. I worry more about the strong arm and intimidatory tactics of punters. That in itself puts people off the sport and gives it a bad name. IMO peaceful protests work a lot better than brute force. I do not want to be involved in horse racing if it appears to be controlled by thugs.
What happened at the start is not unusual. Its been happening for a while. On virtually eery occassion Mike De kock has been interviewed he has slammed the starter. To be fair, the pre race comments of Sean Tarry showed that he was worried about the horse.

KZN Starter To Be Sanctioned
Slow activation of siren noted
UPDATED ON NOVEMBER 9, 2017
The investigation into the circumstances which led to the third race at Greyville Racecourse on 27 October 2017 being declared null and void has been concluded.
The following has been established:
The Starter raised the flag at the rear of the pens to advise the Assistant Starter, who was starting the race, that all was fine behind the pens.
At that point Jockey Lance Pagel, rider of THREE SHIPS, called for the Starter to wait as his mount was restless. The Assistant Starter waited accordingly and once THREE SHIPS appeared settled, the start was affected. At this stage the Assistant Starter noted that THREE SHIPS had left the stall rider-less, not knowing the reasons for this horse being rider-less, he allowed the race to continue.
The Assistant Starter claimed that whilst he focused on the problem on the outside of the field, he was not aware that stall gate 1 with SONG OF MITU in it, had not opened. As soon as he was aware of this, he activated the recall siren declaring a false start. The balance of the field raced on without incident.
The Assistant Starter acknowledged that he had in all likelihood activated the siren later than he should have. This, coupled with the heavy downpour which had hindered his visibility, had led to the riders not hearing the siren. The Board acting in terms of Rule 61.5.13.1 had no choice but to declare the race null and void.
It has been recommended to the NHRA Management that the Assistant Starter should be sanctioned in terms of the NHRA’s Disciplinary Code and Grievance Procedure.

a hard rule is needed - I personally think the best rule is to scrap the idea of unloading the field for the "fav" - It leads to confusion - If punters know beforehand that they will not be given time to reconstruct bets then they must live by the rules.. I went out of my bet with that scratching but i and many others will have to be honest and say there have been days when the fav is scratched and the new tf runs unplaced and one of my other selections come through and the dividend is boosted by this - I don't care either way if field applies or horses are reloaded just as long as there is a PRINTED rule that does not change as the starter and stipes see fit - It reminds me of children making up games and as they go along they change rules - One rule for all and stick to it - Just like the objection rules - The more you muddy the parameters of rules the more punters get angry - Yesterday there were angry punters who could not understand why in similar cases they were given time to reconstruct wagers but now suddenly the field was dispatched in seconds - as per usual the consistency rule is not part of the NHRA handbook

Chris van Niekerk can get answers, people listen when he talks, he is a big part of the industry, this is not about him showing he controlls the industry its about getting fair play for the investors all accros the board, we approached Chris in a nice way and he responded in a nice way so you don't need to fear, if we decide to protest or boycott racing we will do it, punters go to Racing to gamble not to fight, as for thug fears don't look at punters rather look inside the controlling structure and ask Shaeen Shaw and Andrew Bonn and Gareth Pepper and others about intimidating tactics

if an exotic was taken on line, how do you go about restructuring a bet?
for that matter, how do you restructure any tote bet?

Normally punters will banker a heavily fancied favorite. If they know before hand that their banker is going to get scratched they can "restructure" their bet by cancelling their ticket and adding new selections to that leg but before the running of the first leg.

Do you mean structure any tote bet as restructuring means that you deviating/amending your original selections.
NB...Most of my exotic bets is structured.

For me the trainer is to blame , like a horse that hates blinkers , remove them if the horse don't like the lights stop trying to force her to race there , its a recipe for disaster. But what do I know I'm just a mug punter

Personally when I play exotics it is only for R50 because of all these other inherent risks which I have no control. I did back Exquisite Touch on the nose and got my money back.
All I can say is “boycott the exotics”.

@Naresh - what I meant was HOW do you cancel a tote ticket to restructure it? You have taken an on line exotic - where do you cancel it?
