Disappointing this Saturday there was to be the first two Baby Races of the Season

7 800m MAIDEN JU VE NILE PLATE 80 000
8 800m MAIDEN JU VE NILE PLATE (Fillies) 80 000

Not enough Entries replaced by other races .

Nine Races - Total 93 Runners
Main Race Has 20 Carded

So Average size Field - 9 Runners

1st Race Grooms Race - Eight Runners
2nd Race - 6 Runners - Crawford 3
3rd Race - 6 Runners - Kannemeyer 3

So scratchings still to come.

Magi think you need to re look at Comp -

Hear Ye Hear Ye - Buy In Comp. 18 & 25 November 11 Nov 2017 07:39 #698750

The competition runs over both days with your funds in your kitty carried over from Kenilworth to Turfontein.
I will edit this thread later with more details.

What is it with the WC trainers, what is it that prevents them from nominating horses? I see the 2 million rand Summer Cup has not attracted one WC entry. This despite all transport costs being paid for. There's an additional bar on offer to the horse that wins the SC and the Met. Whilst I get it that the odds of that happening are slim at best, surely the likes of Ramsden, Kannemeyer, Snaith, Marshall et al have nice horses that probably would not even make the final field of the Met, but would be competitive in the SC?

The lack of imagination is baffling. Clearly these WC owners don't need the cash, or more likely its too much of a schlepp for these glory boys to raid. Before we entertain the chorus of whiners about travelling and altitude, let me remind you that masters like Millard did this for practice.

DHT I have no insight into the politics in the WC racing hierarchy. I will say that seeing Phumelela is now running the show, I have no doubt that "their" boys will be calling the shots. One thing that I did think would be addressed is the amount of nominations received. It seems I got this wrong

Western Cape trainers and owners definitely not doing their part to attract the punters back to the races.

I know there are clashes with seasons but hey, surely NOT ALL WC horses are running in the QP or the SunMet.

So for this time of year, nominate your other horses for the Highveld feature races for pete's sake.

Their don't care attitude is pathetic

Hope De Kock, Tarry and co go clean up in the Cape

I am dissapointed because there are some really nice horses running on Saturday , so decided to fly down on Wednesday , attend the gallops , go to the sales and then Racing on Saturday back on Sunday.

Flights not cheap and hotels ridiculous at this time of the year "If you can get In"

Was looking forward to seeing the return of Sand and Sea in the 4th with Green Plains , then an ok field in the LANZERAC READY TO RUN STAKES .

Onto the SELANGOR CUP some lovely horses running, so it seemed to be worth the trip from JHB.

Started weighing up pro's and cons's and soon could not be bothered, because of the rest of the race card. So on to plan B

Will watch gallops on Site , will watch sale on line . buy some meat and have a braai on Saturday .

Just saved myself thousands .

I have nothing against small fields/few nominations for 2 year old races. Makes sense to keep these babies back a while and still have a horse left once it hits 3 years, instead of breaking down being pushed too hard too early.

Spot on , Sugahorse!

The racing of juveniles is a relatively recent development in thoroughbred racing which has its origins in the 1970's. Prior to that it was quite unusual for the simple reason that a horse only reaches physical maturity at 5.

In most, but not all, instances exploiting 2 year olds does little or nothing for the welfare of the animal but PLENTY to fatten up the veterinary profession when immature physiologies are put under racing stress.

When one allocates a horse to a trainer you tacitly agree to leave the decision as to when that horse is 'ready' to a professional. Insisting that the animal be entered on a specific day or for a specific event is pointless as circumstances often conspire to make a mockery of any plan.

In the case of the Western Cape the juvenile season co-incides with the hardening up of the ground with the advent of summer. As most of the (surviving) owners would prefer not to face the prospect of expensive remedial treatment horses in this centre often start their careers a little later.

Maybe Phum should offer to subsidize a few floats from PE to fill fields?
