Had a real handicapping system back then....had we been using the current MR then without a doubt the first 3 would have been 120+ and probably half the field
Wolf Power's record is well known, Spanish Pool won Queen’s Plate, Champion Stakes, Clairwood Champion Stakes, and Sun International,(Summer Cup) ran 2nd twice to Tecla Bluff and was beaten 2,5L in the Sussex ...definitely a 120+
The 3rd and 4th horses had run 1st and 2nd in the '83 July, and Devon Air also won the Gold Cup in '83

Wolf Power won 18 races..17 at G3 OR Better incl the Queens Plate x2
Spanish Pool won in Britain,Germany and was imported to South A frica..winning the Schweppes,Clairwood and queens Plate...top miler
Devon Air ..her claim to fame was winning the July and Gold Cup...never a miler
Leagle Eagle has never lost at Kenilwoth over 1600 and won The Queens Plate 3 times
Pocket Power won the Queens Plate 4 times..
my personal feeling is that Wolf power would have been difficult to beat but Leagle Eagle would most likely be 2 nd or 3rd and Devon Air would have been lucky to be in the final field over 1600 m

You didn't have handicappers back then but if you listen to the crap spewed by some you would be amazed that the cream still rose to the top.
You also didn't have 7 year old one time winners who had run 60 plus races.
You also didn't have programmes "highlighted" by a slew of MR60 handicappers.
You also never had 2 and 3 year olds that were seriously "handicapped" by being punished for having talent. You had a system that ALLOWED talent without ending a horses career.
You also didn't have horses running no good, over the wrong distances and the like so to either fool the handicapper to drop ratings, or else not incur penalties.
You didnt have 6 year old strugglers suddenly come well and win a few in a row and still have a MR 55. Polo springs to mind as does that filly of Goosen, the name escapes me. These genes get into our breeding ranks and we wonder why there is so much dreck on offer.
Amazingly you never had meetings with 52 horses spread over 8 races.
You also didn't have idiots telling you the reason people dont like MR is because they don't understand it.
What you did have was a system that put horses in their places when the time was right. The MR system has nurtured the trainers art of BS to another degree because they can use this to justify slow horses being kept longer.
You also didnt have a system where every f%*ing horse has its MR raised 6 points, then dropped because people in the Ivory towers don't have a clue.
You had a system where a horses handicap level stood up regardless of centre.
You had a system where Egos and opinions counted for naught.
What a crock of shit this MR is.

By the way, I disagree with the notion that LE would struggle to run a place in that era. Over 1600 in his prime, he is as good as anything that I have seen. IT is difficult to compare different eras but I have no doubt he was good enough to keep his unbeaten record over the mile.

Nic I stand under correction but isn't Legal Eagle unbeaten over the mile?

Wolf Power was a machine, best I have seen over a mile.
Just imagine Wolf Power, Legal Eagle and Pocket Power over 1600m in the Queens Plate, what a race it would have been for the racing fanatic!
