The yearling sales?
The TBA created a sales division which includes conducting the auctioning of horses.
Like any auction company, they charge entry fees, acceptance fees and a commission % which is charged on the reserve or sales price.
It goes to funding sales venues, upkeep, wages and saleries, autioneers and expenses, the profit goes to the TBA.
The TBA is one of the few (or only?) thoroughbred breed organisations in the world who conducts it's own sales.

I think the pricing structure should be based according to the average price of the National Yearling sales results for that year.
If the average price for the horses at the National Yearling sale is for excample R645 000-00. The stakes for a maiden should be 15% of the average sales price.
The first check should be 75% of the 15%.
Let me recapp National Yearling sales average 645 000x 15% = R96 750-00.
The first cheque should be 75% of the R96 750-00 = R72 562.50-00
The rest of the stakes can be distributed between the 2nd 3rd and 4th placed horses.
There shouldn't be a 5th stake cheque in the maidens.
The rest of the stakes category according to me dont have to change to much.(Novice etc)
Funds should be accumulated from the sales of horses thru our sales rings and contributed towards the stake pools. For excample National yearling sales contributions should be more than for excample the National two year old sales.
Bookmakers should contribute 3% off all betting turnover towards the tote and not only 3% of winning bets.

bookmakers don't pay, the punter pays. you try and tell the punter he must pay 6% of his stake regardless whether he is betting on the 1/3 fav or a 50/1 shot.
better rather to tax the bookmaker from his profits, as that is what all are in business to make

Bravo, again with the 'should' do this and 'should' do that by people who 'have' never done anything.
For a time in HK, the richest racing district before Dubai, they restricted how much you could spend on a horse.
Please explain why the racing industry 'should' be dictated to by some rich prick who wants to spend millions on a yearling? Why 'should' Phumelela Ltd, owned by pension funds etc, be dictated to by the spending of the richest owners buying super expensive pedigrees?
One last question Einstein, just how do you link the sales prices of yearlings to the ability of a racing company to pay all your 'shoulds'?

Not 100% right Greenbook.
What i am saying is that the bookmakers business should be run like a normal franchise business.
Instead of a franchise bus who normaly pays between 4 and 6% of turnover towards the franchisee we keep all turnover of the bookie 3% to be paid over to the tote.
If a punter win, the 6% contribution 3% towards tote and 3% towads tax stay the same.Nothing chnge towards the punter.

Hacker it will be interesting to see one contribution of you regarding any topic.
It is very clear to me that you don't own any racehorse and never will.
Let me help you out.
We as owners contribute towards a lot of jobs and incomes in this game.
Lets start from the sales ring and work our way up slowly so that you can keep up.
After the bid got knocked down on you as owner the following happen.
The insurance company is the first one next to you. Must insure for at least three months after sale.
The contribution towards two year old future races.
Now lets start the transport from the sales ring to a stud farm or other place of choice. Yip their is cost for the new owner.
Cost onto the owner for standing the yearling at the stud farm or spelling farm for at least a year. (helping with job creation etc. etc.)Horse sickness and flue injections.
Horse to go into training with trainer again transport cost.
Horse to be in training for a minimum of six months before even discussions regarding his/her racing. Yip cost. You following.
Farrier cost and vet cost.
Of to the NHRA to register the racehorse for racing purposes. Yes cost.
Now did you see in any off this cost where phumelela or the bookies or the TBA contribute.
I didn't see any contribution from you, did you.
You with me so far.
If the horse win a maiden why shouldn't the stake cheque be high after all i paid so far for all the expenses.

Guys with respect as I said at the top - this is to do with 'Stakes Levels'.
I for one have no problems discussing and helping with things like welfare assistance for the low paid - insuring that facilities are up to scratch etc.
But this particular discussion is about stakes, so let's try and stick to it and see if we can find some common ground.
Respectfully, Jim.
(ps Oscar - hoping for late September - Foxy blonde and all - lol!)

Bravo, as it happens I own many racehorses. And also other sporting horses. One example is a competition horse that was very expensive, but competes for little or zero price money, only the occasional rosette.
They require tow vehicles and horse boxes, saddles, stables, food and grooms. All of which I pay for. Over and above racing costs and insurance.
But, all of this is my choice. I deserve only what I make happen. When I started, I knew what it would cost, and that the chances of making it pay for itself is almost nil.
I have never stopped paying, and you have never stopped saying what 'should' happen. Grow up, play the game and stop crying for fuck's sake, you are pathetic.

Why is it that so many on this list persist in playing the man and not the ball?
Pathetic.

Not a bad thought Bravo.... how would it be policed / audited? Do bookies still need to hand in there betting sheets after every race ?? Excuse my ignorance here .
