Stumbled across this site. No idea who uploaded this material but he was definitely hooked on SA Racing.

I wish my Dad had not thrown out my Ascot and Borrowdale racecards of the late 70’s. I do have Gosforth Park’s last book and also Newmarket’s but that is in the crappy version of C’form which tells nothing about being the last “official” meeting.

When I was in my teens I should keep the race cards for Natal. Now I only have all the July race cards from 1994. Now that I am in Johannesburg I have to make a plan to get the race card for this years July. Been to the July from 1995 to 2019.

The Summer Cup will be run in the last week of November.
Back in 1978 it was sponsored by Holiday Inns.
The stake for that running was R1OO,OOO--
The stake this year will be 10 time more.
Put simply if you earned R 1OO-- a month in '78.
You will now earn R1,OOO-- a month in 2020.

Thank you Mike
Actually the average inflation rate over this period is 8.55
So your R100 buying power then would be R3405.47 in 2020 😎

Dave - why spoil a nice memory with facts
Does anyone know who won that race - looking at the card, Bold Monarch was a shoe-in - and I was not aware that we had Merit Ratings in 1986 ?

Checked my records. Furious won at 7/1. Bold Monarch was third, the beaten favorite 2/1.

Thanks Naresh - seems that even in those days the best weighted did not always come out on top; anyone knows what the 'p' in the M.R. column indicates (e.g. Furious 130p) ?

Cape Town racing was top class in the 80s. All three tracks were packed out to the rafters during the summer months. At least 30 on course bookies. The Gold ring bookies ran the show all with their flashy suits and shiney brogues and the bling dripping off them. Their leather satchels were stuffed with dash before the meeting but even more so after the last race.
Jacket and ties had to be worn if you were in the members area. Fast and efficient tellers who are always friendly and polite.
You could almost touch the horses in the parade ring at Kenilworth which was my local and favoured track as I lived within walking distance.
The riders of those days were IMO far superior to those riding today. If it rained and the track was a bit iffy they still raced. Nowadays if a leaf blows across the track they want to call the meeting off.
I can consider myself fortunate to have experienced the very best of South African racing as in those days it was run by people who knew what they were doing.

Not just a scribble, a full abbreviation.
I put R10 win on Classic Flag. My pink ticket just read: CF
