SA vs the rest of the world with shoes falling off
4 years 9 months ago - 4 years 9 months ago
According to Andrew Bon it happens all over the world so I'm opening this thread to see the actual figures where it happens.
Please anyone who witnesses a shoe having to be re-shod anywhere in the world would they kindly add it to the thread and name which place it happened, including our racing if I miss something.
Today we had 3 shoes going amiss....
SA 3
Rest of world 0

.......that Greyville poly is not kind on shoes.....even when racing on grass they go down on poly.....I believe it has much to do about the foot rotation and the impact angle of the hooves through the artificial surface.....seen horses in Singapore on poly shed shoes while they are actually racing......:S

I'm sure the placings & odds figures need to be noted as well. Most horses go on to run NOWHERE.
I would also need to do thesis on 'The effect on placings for horses reshod at the start'.

The guys at the start usually only realise 2 minutes before the off that the horse needs to be reshod.................

There are plenty on SP who offer a lot on this topic. A few observations I have made.
1. They are quick to shoot down the concept that losing a shoe at the start has an impact on the horse's chances based on the fact that as Eram pointed out, most horses do in fact run out the places anyway. Eram, however, points out that this needs to be backed up with facts on odds to verify the chance the horse had anyway. Wrong to simply say that there is no impact. Lack of evidence does not indicate no causal relationship.
2. As a punter, I would only notice the impact on horses that I back. I would only back a horse if I think it has a chance of winning or placing. Most punters are like this. The opinion thus formed on the impact of horses losing shoes at the start would then only be formed based on horses that are perceived to have a chance of running a forward race. My personal observations have been that the horse generally runs a poor race once it has work done at the start, based on what I can only describe as horses that seem to have a good chance running poorly after the event. My observation, combined with many others, have resulted in the opinion that is now currently prevalent, that there is infact a negative relationship that exists here.
3. Horses are creatures of habit. Once they get to the start they are amped to go, unless people legitimately believe that horses go from cold to raring to go as soon as the gate opens. Imagine the impact of all that energy inside the horse boiling up as the horse is made to stand still for a few mins just before having to jump while having to get its shoe refitted. This can be likened to why some believe it is advantageous to be loaded into the stalls as late as possible.
Sheldon Peters claimed that 90% of horses that lose a shoe at the start go on to do nothing. I would be so bold as to suggest that, all else being equal, he is on the money here.

......an athlete does not put on a new pair of spikes on the day of his big race.....nor do/should horses get shod on race days......an old timer trend was to shoe horses that run on a Saturday on the Thursday.....in fact a superstition arose in horse racing homes that no one was allowed to even cut their finger and toe nails on a Friday...the horse shoes (aluminium) and hooves have a certain amount of ductility and "wear in" over the period from being shod to the actual race....so refitting a shoe at the start is like putting on a new takkie just before you go for a run.....not at all comfortable.....:S

Shot for the input people.
The main thing I would like to know is why does it happen so often here compared to anywhere overseas?
USA-dirt,poly and grass.
UK-poly,tapeta and grass.
Singapore-poly and grass.
HK-dirt and grass.
So you see there are plenty different types of tracks we see horses run on yet they lose shoes here in SA maybe 10 or 20 times more than anywhere else.

With the French Harness Racing the write-ups normally say a horse will run better unshod on all fours.
These are probably standard-bred horses and they race on sand all the time I think.

True. Wasnt aware of this.
Horses racing unshod had 0.7 s/km lower VT than fully shod horses and showed better performance when racing on neutral tracks during the late summer than horses with other shoeing conditions during the same period. However, racing unshod increased the relative risks of galloping and disqualification by 15%–35% in all seasons. Horses shod only on the hind hooves showed better performance than fully shod horses, without higher risks associated with competing unshod.
