Scotia takes a trip to the Vaal
4 years 1 month ago
Good morning all on a slightly cold day in Pretoria.
Hope you are all well and virus free?
Bob has the normal Vaal thread running with all you need to know with regards today’s meeting.
I just want to share my experience over the last 24 hrs and obviously give you an update on Humble Tune.
We had a look on google maps to remind me where the track is, it’s just old age .
If you type in Vaal racetrack from Moreleta Park, Pretoria, the result shows 3 hr and 10 mins .
I am not sure if this is by ox wagon, but it shows the track below Sasolburg?
Mrs S and myself considered that for a 6 hour drive we would be better just driving to Kloof to visit the grandkids.
Mrs S made the call to stay over and has found us accommodation, hope it’s for the old track and not the new one?
Not sure if 4Racing have built a new state of the art track 100 Kilometers further south of the original one?
I was just trying to jog my old memory with my trips to the Vaal and can share these memories.
My first winner was at the Vaal, Mucho Hombre and was trained by Robert Maroun (Buddies father).
It was 25 L clear at bend and held on by a short head, ridden by Zabelski?
We took my mum there to lead in Breathless, photos were taken only to discover that we had been beaten by a short head by Rootin Tootin. It was a bad angle at the Vaal and we did not have an Ali to check the error of our ways.
Plus many other memories if I can just find the track.
Gave Georgie the Greek a call last night to meet me at the Hangover as I remember he had a problem with his last trip.
He phoned me from Sasolburg and I said he had gone too far also using google maps, in addition he was stuck in a downpour. It took him 4 hours to get there.
Anyway getting back to today.
Mrs S is making sandwiches for our road trip and a flask of tea, I have a bottle of JWB and couple of bottles of wine for the stay over in the cool box.
If we do find our way to the track, I am hoping it will be worth the trip and no pressure on Candice.
When the 8 horse field was confirmed and bookies priced up, we were basically looking at 5 horses in the region of 4/1 which confirms a very competitive field.
In my mind I thought Oyster King would be evens after his last Frankel impersonation, winning by 12L.
Since studying the form lines and weight Humble has the beating of the King and my niggle is that Bling has retained the ride on Oyster King.
I have no problem with Craig riding Humble and he won the maiden very well.
Humble is very well with strong formlines going into this race and I expect a big effort today and have gone for a win bet only.
So today it’s “All or Nothing” sure it was the Small Faces?
Hope you are all well and virus free?

A tip for navigators to the Vaal - do not use Apple/iPhone navigation.

Best tip - when you cross the Vaal river its the next offramp. I liked going to the Vaal as a punter you could easily get into any enclosure if you were dressed in a jacket and tie. Was a long trip back when it was a bad day but Wednesday afternoons at the Vaal were always good fun.
Have a good run with Noble Tune, I make Have a go Jo your main danger but weight may count in your favour

Hi Dave,
i thought u were home & hosed last time when S'manga went clear last time - only for St.John Gray runner to sneak up on the inside rail.. Hopefully u can go one better over this slightly shorter trip.
Break a leg !
