4Racing to bail out Cape Racing?
3 years 9 months ago - 3 years 9 months ago
Thought the first paragraph of the Managing Executive vacancy was interesting
The role is based at Kenilworth Racecourse and reports into the Chairman/ Board of Kenilworth Racing. The successful incumbent will mainly be responsible for defining the strategy and direction of the business and will also be responsible for the execution of any agreements with 4Racing. Should any agreements be concluded with 4Racing there will be matrix accountability to the 4Racing CEO and the respective 4Racing Executive Management team in executing on the aligned goals and objectives.

A person meeting all the requirements of the position does not exist. One that most closely fits the requirements will attract an annual salary of R3m plus in the open market. This shows how delusional those running Kenilworth Racing are. The flip side is that they already have someone in mind and this is just a lot of smoke and mirrors to show that a fair employment process was followed.
You have to ask what value the Oppenheimer chosen Chairman has brought to the table since they chased Bloomberg away. I don't see much innovation, change or progress.

Let's have a light hearted look at all of this! :
1.) If I read between the lines it appears that Cape Racing is looking for a skilled beggar. The ad stopped just short of requesting an applicant with a big cap ( as in 'cap in hand').
2.) I've lived and raced in Cape Town all my life but have almost never encountered anyone here (outside of an actual racecourse) who is even remotely interested in racing.
3.) Usually the only comment racing gets from polite outsiders is : 'Isn't racing in trouble?' I have been hearing that since just after the equine flu in the 80's.
4.) I was an employee for a major retail group when I started racing in the 70's. The MD got wind of my newfound hobby. He called me in and cautioned me that my career might stall if I continued with the pursuit.
5.) Critics suggest that 'nothing has happened' in Cape racing in recent months. What can possibly change with no funding?
6.) I don't necessarily believe the demise of Cape racing would materially affect peripheral activities such as tourism etc. Local support departed years ago so why do we need to run an expensive sideshow to pander to a couple of foreign owners?
7.) Why not offer the whole show to Snaith racing? They already fill most of the fields so may as well do the admin whilst they are about it. At least they would programme appropriate races for their string.
8.) If Cape Racing closed KZN could get some runners into the July. A good reward for all those MR66 polytrack races they stage.
9.) If Cape Racing closed would Garth Puller almost become the future champion trainer by default? Go Garth!
10.) Why are so many people so jealous of a failing business? Might it have something to do with Cape successes at the highest level over the last couple of decades?
11.) If you are one of those types who likes to make decisions based on actual evidence you would have no qualms about jumping ship. It's not an ethical activity and hurts a lot of people and animals.

Corporate structure cannot continue with businesses that have returned to hobby status. Horseracing needs professional-amateurs to drive the way forward to restore club management. Boutique horseracing is the future for SA horseracing. Does SA horseracing own any courses? Will municipals renew leases for club managed tracks? Will municipals invoice responsible rates and taxes to club owned courses?

What a pity Newmarket has gone. Retrospectively, it looked like it could have been a boutique racecourse.

Have they not already been bailed out by 4 Racing, didn't Ringer mention this when he resigned?
