I’m still tuned into Peter. However, yes, if you want to back a fancied runner on the ante-post market then the risks may outweigh the AP price. Come raceday, you are most welcome to back your favoured runner on the SP market.

The AP market is there to back a big outsider, with a few pence, whom you think may just have a nice chance of winning. The fun comes if and when during the passage of time the AP price shortens and shortens to say favourite and cometh the race then shits home by 5 lengths. That’s racing. Get a life guys, f*ck the numbers. You are already losing on the SP market!!

I am in the same camp as Mac.

I have taken a multiple over the next two weekends onto a July horse. The odds, if the ticket survives going into the July, and that fancy makes the final field works out to 310/1.

Considering the amount wagered, i feel that is good odds. Can certainly lose much more between now and then if one keeps having an on the head punt, like most feel, on incorrect priced horses in the pre-nomination or ante-post markets.

My 2 cents worth.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

Not at all. It is AP. (What’s Pre-Nomination?).

It's naming conventions imo - don't believe there is any 'pre-nomination' betting from international firms - to them it is name Ante-Post; here in South Africa for some reason WSB has a 'pre-nomination' market - which as I understand it will be re-named to 'Ante-Post' once nominations are in (but before acceptances) - anyway as you say it is still essentially the same - if you take a bet at this stage, you will lose your stake if the horse does not run

Ante-Post is before the final field whether pre-noms, noms or whatever. Ante is Latin, meaning before.

It is the punters who carry all risks in both markets.

Correct - the punter has all of the risk should his horse not win, regardless of reasons and excuses, on a price taken in the ante-post market.

In an SP market it is the other punters (in the same book) who pay for your risk should your horse be scratched.

When Enable won the Arc for the first time, it had to be supplemented in the week of the Arc although it was the favorite. They normally have asterisk next to the horse indicating it needs to be supplemented.

Agree at this stage odds are tight to speculate.

In ante post its not all the punters risk

Eg you take a fixed ante post price at 10/1 and a fancied runner at 5/1 is scratched.
You as the punter still have the 10/1 on a possible 5/1 shot with no % percentage deduction due to scratchings

Sounds complicated even to me but just saying that it can work both ways......

Good Punting

Yip correct - so if one needs to take an A/P bet, you need to be 'sure' that the horse is very likely to make the final field - and it gets more likely that it will run if the horse is at least nominated (i.e. it would make no sense to take an A/P bet if you know for a fact that the horse is not even going to travel to KZN) - and to compensate for that risk one should be offered odds which you deem to be fair - I think we all agree (bar maybe one or two exceptions) that the current odds being offered on the July, are skimpy to say the least - which probably means the odds won't change much until say the beginning of May - so be patient
