Virtue signalling and social engineering only have one outcome..failure...see all previous efforts at "transformation"...
Unless there is an existing pipeline of female apprentices, this new rule, which T Rivaland, in his Sportingpost comment, indicated was not done with consultation, will only apply to the one female jockey currently riding, about to lose her claim, and still winning without any added advantage...
Just see where EE, especially in the public sector with an increasing push to further enforce on the private sector, has got us in this country...
It's bad enough trying to analyse a race with the inconsistency of runners and unkown intentions of trainers wanting to land betting coups but now we have to include another factor whenever this one particular jockey, who rides and wins at greater than 10% win rate, rides...
The "sport" can say goodbye to my daily 10 cents...thank you...I wish fellow Clanners well in their dart-board throwing...

Will girl apprentices get 5.5kg?
Also the new rule will limit Rachel to taken rides of 55kg and over

imo this is going to limit her opportunities more than it will assist

Guess we have to justify our exorbitant salaries somehow , even if it is a stupid idea , Reminds one of a certain minister who thought a 100m high flag was a good idea

Wonder what other stories would pop up if there were sudden rule changes that only benefitted one or two parties out of the whole racing population.

I’ve been shouted at by my wife for going on and on about Moodley and Hyde but once again Moodley has shown his colours from the long ago AGM by saying he can do what he likes because he’s the CEO..The sooner Owners -Jockeys and Trainer and #1 Punters take a stand against this Attitude of His and NHA Racing will never go forward

I'm not sure either will be around in 5 years to see the results of this move....Rachel seems to want to travel so I think she won't be riding here either in 5 years... the sooner there is a change in the NHRA the better

This rule has placed Rachel in a tough spot. Will she speak out against it?

This rule is applicable to any female jockey going forward. You are correct. Shes getting unwarranted attention. Everyone is using her has the benchmark. She never asked to be put in this controversial situation.

You right about that but the bigger picture is it's not only about Rachel.
Will there have been a bigger outcry if it was a Denise Lee who was in the spotlight?
This is about opening up the profession to young lassies and empowering them to pursue a career in racing. Without becoming a.... dropout..... after completing the Appie ship.

I was fascinated as a bystander observing this volcanic subject matter rub almost all and sundry up the wrong way. The comments on SP were also colourful and echoed this thread.
We know that there are no certainties in horseracing. However, in life, there are a few certainties and that includes DEATH, TAXES and TRANSFORMATION FAILING SPECTACULARLY.
Is the outrage sparked by this subject matter justifiable?
If it’s justifiable, the obvious questions include:
1- Should this anger be directed to an organisation(s)?
2- Should this anger be directed to an individual(s)? and
3- Most importantly, what evidence does one present to justify this anger and to hold them accountable?
South Africa, as a country, has a proud history of consistently producing world class male jockeys for the past 50+ years. SAJA acting on their own did not produce these world class male jockeys nor did the NHA. Owners, trainers and many other stakeholders played a pivotal role in producing these world class male jockeys.
So, how is it that the very same people and or organisations above that produced world class male jockeys were so piss poor with the fairer sex since 1988 that only 12 of 41 female apprentices (i.e. 29%) qualified from the academy after a 5-year stint. That is a whopping 71% drop-out / failure rate. ASTONISHING, given the illustrious credentials of the same individuals and or organisations to churn out world class male jockeys under the very same curriculum!!
Transformation has and will always fail spectacularly where the powers that be use the PERCEPTION – Case in point being that a male dominated industry since 1988 failed to understand or admit to the failings of their strategy to attract and retain female apprentices and jockeys into the industry.
Imho, the 41 female apprentices are the brains trust on this subject matter. Any transformational strategies or framework that is not reflective of the push factors that prevailed then, is bound to fail us as an industry in take 2 mode. Whether we as South Africa choose to align with France or the UK’s in relation to female jockeys is a secondary matter that should not dominate this agenda. One of the most important members of brains trust is the 42nd member, Venniker.
