.....and I see a better path through going the work rider route just like Lyle and Rachel have done.....cant waste time and money on kids that are sh!t scared of horses but are sent to SAJA because the family is poor....kids that wanna ride horses must put their names down and get to work in stables during school holidays....I did it and so did my little brother next thing he and I were taking horses to work at the course 1st the easy ones and then it got harder....we did not have the strength to actually ride work....and nor were we gonna be jocks but f@ck okes that do that today actually get to ride in races....:S
we'd have no Marwing, Khumalo, Fortune Yeni Matsenyane and countless others including many white riders if this approach was followed - It does not matter how they get there but it does matter if they have talent or not - It's the SAJA not the International Workriders and stable employees Academy so those that do not show need to move on long before they qualify still claiming 1.5kg.(and i'm not talking about females )
....I think that all things were equal and it was never a problem for anyone no matter how pale one was when Weichong and Fortune were there.....however another top jockey producing family had already got one family member through and while his younger cousin was there....they were asked to pay in as the full scholarship for people of means was taken away..... that kid had a single mother and she at the time had no way of having the means either...nothing fair about being paler there ....and what you have high lighted was exactly quoted to me by the uncle of that kid who landed up fitting the bill....:dry:
.....and maybe let me rephrase what actually happened.....uncle coughs the big bucks for nephew to follow in his cousins footsteps....when he gets there he is with a whole bunch of transformation cases and many of them dont really want to be there as they have no passion or will to be there as they are mostly afraid of horses, but are afraid to tell their families riding masters et al....but people running the show pushed and persevered as they did not want the transformation to fail it then saw a big drop out rate some years after these dont wanna be there's failed to qualify....: ohmy: You are correct....they should have been identified and weeded out at the outset and money would not have been squandered....the only way to gauge if some one is keen is to have a "school camp" at a riding facility and soon see those that can be one with a horse....and not find out after trying to educate one that they were there to go to a better school....:whistle:

This should be a thread about the previously discouraged and not the previously disadvantaged. Some will find any reason to bring skin colour into a debate. Across this country there are ill advised policy decisions being made in the name of transformation. This is clear across all industries. But like it or not transformation initiatives are not going away regardless of how ludicrous or illogical it may be. As long as you live here you have put up with it.
Back to the topic. As a punter I am all for this sex allowance. Any advantage, we will take it. I do not take the moral high ground on many issues in this industry such as animal cruelty etc. I cheer when a horse and jockey fall at the last fence enabling my punt to win. In that moment do I care about the fallen horse and rider?
Is it right that a female gets an advantage? Probably not, but as a punter I only see how it can benefit me.

.....if anything needs more transformation is SAJA itself....as they are still trying to work with a formula that worked very well 30 years ago....however when 2 riders distinguish themselves through becoming top of their profession by initially going through a "work rider programme" only to be then be claimed and accepted into the academy then a change is due. When I went to the SAJA website to try make contact there ...Lyle Hewitsons achievements are boldly recorded and claimed as great success of SAJA.....:dry:
Lyle was academically very good in fact excellent. He chosed to go the work rider route for him to complete his school. His Alma Mater is Kearsney college.
.....krikey thats way better than anything SAJA has to offer.....some failed jocks I knew back in the day landed up as car guards in Boksburg even though they had matriculated....and that was way before 1994.....:ohmy: So as Mr H says SAJA need not try and groom/ educate/ "discipline" 15year olds as it has not really provided any sort of educational advantage but instead take matriculants into a higher learning college facility to further education while "work" riding...subjects like animal or horse husbandry, financial management ,maths to calculate agents commissions fill in a SARS form etc. so if they then fail as jocks they are better equipped to find alternative work in the industry....:huh:
You could hear it in the way Lyle spoke, he had a brain. Translated well in his case to race riding as well, as a lot of his races were won by having a better understanding of how the race would pan out than the other jockeys.
