Race 7: Grade 2: 1450m
#8 WILLIAM ROBERTSON(12-10) showed good improvement as a late 3 yr old, culminating in a 2nd in the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint. He looked to have a tough task giving 10kgs to his field last time, but he acquitted himself well, running on from behind after being squeezed between runners out the gates. The 1 draw should allow him to be perfectly placed throughout and the weight conditions of this race means he should have the measure of his older rivals.
#11 MERCANTOUR(5-1) carries just 51kgs as a 3 yr old and the 3 yr olds are competitive in these races at these weight terms. He is by Var out of a Western Winter mare, so there could be some question marks as to his ability to get this trip. However, he did run well when giving weight to the field over 1400m and he did find some interference that day, so it’s it’s far too early to be able to say he doesn’t stay this far.
SELECTION: 8, but I definitely respect the 3yr old 11.

They don't seem to get around the trainers like they do in PE

Yes we have a few of the 'big guns' coming back - but not a good sign imo that the Cape and Gauteng can't come to some agreement about having feature days on the same day - would imo have been much better had one of the meetings been switched to next week - and my two cents would be that the Gauteng 'Summer Season' should be kicking off later, once the rains have come and the grass tracks at Randjies are ready - anyway what do I know.
As it has not rained yet and the grass track at Randjies is still not ready, I think we could be in for some strange results - thoughts ....
R1: I don't have a fancy here - imo any of Ignatius, Run for Cover, Gimme a Diamond and King Venus can win this, with the roughie What Say You capable of running into the money
R2: Intoxicating has some very nice form and a neat draw - should just about win it if she sees out the 1600; the filly with the international pedigree from the Azzie stable, Gregarious Gal could show big improvement over the 1600 and is a danger imo; the rest do look a bit moderate, but Namaqua Blossom found support on her debut, and could also show big improvement over 1600 - think the winner will come from these
R3: Magical Flight has been dropped 9 points by the handicapper since she ran half-a-length 2nd over this track and trip and is a deserving favorite for me; Tabby Cat comes from an in-form stable, but her form not that strong imo (the very moderate Cerulean Blue is weighted to finish close to her), so the biggest danger could be Angel's Wish from pole position
R4: Set weights race for the 3yr-old fillies - as such should be fought out between the two top-rated fillies, Miss Daisy (we had the wrong sibling last year
) and Feather Boa - my preference is for FB; Mrs Browning comes with something of a reputation, but for me needs to show it on the track; the danger imo could be Simple Simple, who was backed to start at 11/10 in her penultimate when taking on Miss Daisy - so she could be better than rated
R5: Equivalent race to R4 for the males, but a much bigger field and also quite a few who could turn out to be more than decent; for me Destiny of Souls has the best form, and a neat draw, so good value imo at 15/2; the biggest danger could be Mover and Shaker, who also has a good draw and is priced up at a mouth-watering 20/1; another roughie that could find his way into the placings is Break Point - Jason Gates makes the trip from KZN for his only ride at the meeting; of course the fancied runners can't be ignored - even though they have drawn in double figures, so not the worst idea to pencil in FIELD in the exotics
R6: Another set weights race for the females - best in are Big Burn and Desert Miracle, but the younger brigade have shown up their elders many times since the season started - so Gimme a Shot (neat draw to boost) could be potentially be much better than rated, and at the weights can't be ignored - think it lies between these
R7: William Robertson has a lot going for him and does look the right banker for the P6; again we have a 3yr-old in the form of Mercantour, but I think he might have his work cut out here from a widish draw; Bingwa imo has always been best over this kind of trip, so could feature, while the course should suit the front running After the Rain, but he has something to find against these at the weights imo
R8: Another set weights race, but quite tough to find the winner imo; Supreme Dance, Run as One, The Kop and Elusive Swan for me not really suited to this track, Back to Black widish draw and probably better over less ground; Definitely Maybe drawn wide and needs to show that the rating she got when running quite well against strong opposition in the SA Fillies Classic, was not a flash in the pan; I'm tempted to put forward Great Affair as my first choice (does hold King's Crusade on their last meeting - but not a lot between him and ES) - but he has not won for 566 days - so another FIELD race imo
R9: A handicap to close, and not straight forward - could be wise to stick with the younger Poet's Warrior from an in-form combination, if not, any of these bar Fort Alado, boasts some sort of chance.
Enjoy - between the power cuts
