Will Muscutt be allowed to race? was created by Bob Brogan
Just wondering after that speech aimed at JHB recently....

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that upon analysis by its Laboratory, the presence of Trendione, a forbidden substance, was disclosed in a urine specimen taken from Bevies Delight after it had won Race 7 at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 17 September 2023.

It was also noted that the specimen taken from this filly contained Altrenogest, an oestrus suppressant, which use is provided for in the provisions of the Exempted Substances List (Appendix N of the Rules).

Subsequently, Bevies Delight (Trained by Mr P B Muscutt) was scratched from Race 4 on Sunday 15 October 2023.

Mr Muscutt has been advised and has waived his rights to send the reference specimen for confirmatory analysis.

The tentative date for an Inquiry to be held into the presence of the forbidden substance, Trendione, is Tuesday, 24 October 2023.

.....why why why.....trying to suppress a mare or in this case a filly from coming into season..... so that she can get a non critical extra win/s to flaunt in the pedigree page....but in also using this other sh!t has a greater probity to destroy the chances of her ever being fertile.....

.....it looks like Pete could have a way out as......

On 22 June 2018, Racing NSW provided notice to the industry in respect to the detection of trace levels of the anabolic steroid trendione and/or trenbolone in certain batches of veterinary prescription animal remedies containing the progestagen altrenogest, used to control the cyclical activity of fillies and mares.

Racing NSW advised that, until further notice, trainers in NSW should not administer injectable products containing altrenogest at any time. Further, trainers were advised they should not use oral altrenogest containing products within one clear day of racing and that these registered products must be used in accordance with the relevant manufacturer’s guidelines.

A number of stable inspections have recently been conducted by Stewards, whereby progestogen containing products not manufactured or registered for use in horses (such as Regumate Oral Progestagen for pigs) have been administered to mares in work.

In one case, this has resulted in trendione being detected in a post-race urine sample.

The use of such products, not manufactured or registered specifically for use in horses, are prohibited from being used in racing stables when there are specific products manufactured and registered for use in horses.

Trainers are advised that when the Stewards establish the administration of products not manufactured or registered for use in horses results in an elevated level of trenbolone, trendione or epitrenbolone in a sample the provisions of LR44A do not apply.

.....and more....

Trainers in Britain are to be warned about their use of the product Regu-Mate following tests in Australia which suggest it may contain anabolic steroids. Regu-Mate is used in many countries to control the fertility cycle of female competition horses and has been popular for years without causing problems but one racing jurisdiction in Australia is now urging trainers to use other drugs after horses there returned positive tests for trenbolone and trendione.

“We will be putting out an advisory note to caution trainers about this issue,” said Brant Dunshea, chief regulatory officer at the British Horseracing Authority. “There’s no evidence at all, not even from screening results, of there being an issue with the product that is sourced in this country but we want to understand more.”

It is understood that the Australasian and European versions of Regu-Mate may contain ingredients from different sources, which are subjected to different preparation processes, either of which might account for the two products giving different results to drug tests. Nevertheless the news is bound to give rise to anxiety among trainers about the possibility of their runners failing tests.

The problems discovered in Australia have only come to light in recent weeks. The version of Regu-Mate available in Britain is to be subjected to a series of lab tests at the BHA’s instigation.

Peter Moody, who trained the famed Australian sprinter Black Caviar, said on Monday that she had “lived” on Regu-Mate. He suggested its anabolic steroid contents may have contributed to the success of fillies and mares in Australia over the last 20 years. “All of my better mares were on it,” he added.

REGU-MATE (altrenogest) Solution 0.22% is indicated to suppress estrus in mares. Suppression of estrus allows for a predictable occurrence of estrus following drug withdrawal. This facilitates the attainment of regular cyclicity during the transition from winter anestrus to the physiological breeding season. Suppression of estrus will also facilitate management of prolonged estrus conditions. Suppression of estrus may be used to facilitate scheduled breeding during the physiological breeding season.

......see that Pete has responded through Turf Talk and has also featured this in SP.....yet some oke there is questioning trainer vet skillz.....no you dont have to go to vet or any other school to orally administer any medication(or drugs).....as there is equipment in the form of a dosage "gun" provided with Regumate and many other orally induced products.....you simply adjust the dosage on the "gun" then insert the nozzle inside the mouth between the cheek and tongue and pull the trigger....the same is done with deworming products, cough mixtures ,vitamins and natural oils.....no need to call the vet if these do not require any prescriptions nor need to be registered in the vet register....

The Peter Muscutt-trained filly Bevie’s Delight was tested positive for Trendione, a forbidden substance, after deadheating for first place in race 7 at Hollywoodbets Greyville on 17 September.
Turf Talk suggests that some were surprised to read he had waived his rights to send the reference specimen for confirmatory analysis and wondered whether it was an admission of guilt.

In fact the key point in this case is that also found in the specimen taken from the filly was a substance called, Altrenogest, an oestrus suppressant, whose use is provided for in the provisions of the Exempted Substances List (Appendix N of the Rules).

Altrenogest is a permitted substance for fillies and mares and is used on those who keep on going in and out of season, because that condition obviously affects their mood which then affects their performance.

Using Altrenogest in male horses is forbidden.

An Australian report on Altrenogist in 2018 said, “All current formulations of Altrenogest contain a low level of background impurities including trenbolone and trendione.”

The report followed the detection of the prohibited substances trenbolone and trendione (both anabolic androgenic steroids) from two racing mares in Victoria in September 2017 and January 2018. The source of these positive swabs had been traced to the injectable form of Altrenogest (specifically Ceva’s Readyserve Injection).

The problem with Altrenogest is it is chemically very closely related to both trenbolone and trendione. In fact, an alternative chemical name for Altrenogest is allyltrenbolone. Trendione is a prohormone with virtually no activity per se. However Trendione can be converted to Trenbolone in the body.

This chemical similarity means that in most (if not all) samples of Altrenogest there will be a small amount of impurities including trenbolone and trendione. Typically these are present in levels below 0.05% and, as such, at levels that are both subtherapeutic,

inconsequential and below normal detection limits. Altrenogest is not converted to either trenbolone or trendione in vivo (in a living organism).

Peter Muscutt confirmed Bevie’s Delight had been given Altrenogest though a routine oral administering.

He said he had handed over the Altrenogest that had been used to the NHA.

He said the NHA confirmed that that the particular Altrenogest used had been contaminated at manufacture stage i.e. the Trendione was found to be present in it.

Subsequent to the two Trendione positives in Australia back in 2017 and 2018, the various racing jurisdictions there issued warnings for the use of Altrenogest. All jurisdictions warned against injectable Altrenogest, some of them warned against both injectable and oral adminstration and some declared oral Altrenogest may be used up until one clear day before racing.

The reason for these warnings was because when it comes to completely forbidden substances, which in this case is steroids, there is not a permissable threshold.

NSW is the only jurisdiction in Australia that allows a steroid threshold to facilitate the use of Altrenogest.

Most international jurisdictions, including UK, Ireland, Hong Kong and Japan, align with the remainder of Australia in not having a permissible threshold for steroids. It would appear South Africa is the same.

It would appear too that in South Africa no such warnings were issued to trainers about the dangers of being tested positive for Trendione if using Altrenogest, as they were in Australia.

The 2018 report in Australia raised the question, “It becomes a philosophical and somewhat abstract argument as to what analytical screening limit actually constitutes a perceived zero level of detectability. That is, if the impurity is below the limits of detectability using the latest, most advanced analytical methods, does this constitute a zero level?”

Peter Muscutt’s concluding words on the subject to Turf Talk, echoed that sentiment.

He said, “It is like getting caught speeding when there are no speed signs on the freeway.”

In a recent case in Australia two mares have been sidelined for 12 months due to Trendione positives and the source in that case is also believed to be oral Altrenogest.
