Yes Jim
No secret what I think of the concept of Betfair and have been trying to get sponsorship for close to 3 years, but it is "illegal" for them to help.
When the discombobulator was stopped for legal threat, I stopped using, they have recently stopped "in running" betting on SA races due to poor liquidity, its always been poor, and one would have thought with the latest venture with Phumelela to promote SA racing, this is a bad move.
Plenty has been said on the site on this topic, and I have a financial model, but briefly you deposit with your card at a poor exchange rate plus get charged commision, you have a winner with deduction, you bring money back via current account, cant use credit card due to restrictions, it comes back after deduction, bank charges and again poor exchange rate, bottom line your 105% bet is in the region of 120% money in the hand.
Its still the best if you are in the UK, but not so great for a South African.
If you prefer to lay? same story, horse is 2/1 you have to offer 3/1 and taking above into consideration you are laying 7/2 on a 2/1 shot.
This is my opinion, and will only be good for the SA punter if it comes with a Rand wallet and proper tax deductions and contribution to support local racing.
Have to fly to the airport.

not loaded at all jim. reason for my question is to determine how many local punters use this avenue despite the "apparant" legalities.
i phoned the betfair customer services desk and asked the question. was put on hold and put thru to a gestapo type account manager who wanted to know why i was asking these questions. seems they are as cagey as pge on this.

Hardly use Betfair anymore, used to be one of the many Betfair users with an edge over the rest.Sitting in the betting shop, with 2 or 3 seconds quicker pictures to the rest of the Betfair users, sweeping up all the cyber money.
Mostly use it now for price guide and the ocasional bet or to save my stake in running on a sporting event.
Wouldn`t touch it for laying/betting horses in running atm as i no longer have the time advantage that i used too.

I'd love to use it, but more for trading other sports than SA racing.
Interesting points about the charges etc. Scotia. Hadn't looked at it that way.

scotia, hibby has just explained why they will no longer offer in running betting in SA, the locals would skin the foreigners alive in the in play market with fast pictures or watching live.

Personally, I do not believe that Betfair is still Illegal,if you are in the clear on the forex issue.
WHY:
1)Must be now legal to bet online with SA registered co.s as it is widely advertised now, including DSTV(and this was illegal until recently) and Betfair has to be a legal entity to contract with P.(both parties to a contract must be legal entities)
2)Why does the "warning to public" quote forex law only?If there was another law, quote it and end all debate!
3)Why so agitated about the ABC debate.....just quote the law and end the debate.....my suspicion is they did not wish the debate to reach a certain conclusion!
Just my logic.....not official!
