Email received today from the WP Owners & Trainers Ass.
The item concerning BetFair (probably taken by WPOTA from a memo from John Stewart) deserves attention.
Who do they think they are?
To arms!

5) When Overseas, if you want to see the South African racing picture live, follow the procedure instructed by Phumelela Gold on your computer – Log on

Then follow instructions
From: John Stewart – Phumelela Gold
It is illegal to bet from SA into Betfair. Also once the promotional period is over South African residents will be geo-blocked from accessing the website - clearly we want to earn the total margin on bets placed by SA residents. If SA residents have a UK bank account then they will be able to bet and access pictures.
In terms of web streaming for SA clients the band width in SA is hugely expensive but that should change during the early part of next year. In any event David Attenborough is exploring other solutions so hopefully something will be available in the not to distant future.

Interesting that it would appear that my contention(on a thread that was pulled) that if you are in the clear with forex then betfair is legal.....To quote"If SA residents have a UK bank account then they will be able to BET and access pictures"
Also means that when forex is lifted, betfair becomes legal for everyone!

I'm interested to know how they're going to prevent us from betting on football, golf, tennis & other things.
When, oh when, will the Gambling Board wake up to the (lost) opportunities BetFair provides.
For one. the soccer world cup is round the corner - imagine the tax revenue they could earn for SA (from SA's soccer mad punters).
The rest of the world has done a complete turn-around on the banning on Bet Fair many of the countries had.
Then again, South African authorities are not best known for common sense.

Common sense and authorities are mutually exclusive, aren't they?

pls can phumelela/gold circle answer this very simple question....
For every 1000 rand bet on betfair, what does it get from them?
is it more or less than thru bookmakers?
is it mor or less than thru the open bet?
my understanding is that phumelela get more thru betfair than the other two streams.
the question now are : why the big problem with betfair?

phumelela/gold circle cannot have a problem with Betfair...
tote pools on
swinger
exacta
trifecta
quartet
P3
PA
P6
Jackpot are exclusive to tote..
Interbet/betfair competes only with win and place pools of the tote..tote pools which are insignificant..???
bookmakers that have problem with laying on betfair...punter being able to do that..
PUNTERS THAT PUNT : WIN BETS : would much rather take bets on
INTERBET
BETFAIR
or any other exchange than taking a WIN bet with the local bookies..
prices on INTERBET and BETFAIR, as a rule are far better than any bookmaker offers..
ONLY JOCKEYS, TRAINERS and BOOKMAKERS want the laying facility..
why not open betfair on the same basis as INTERBET...punting only...to all south african punters....competition is good????

How do Phumelela go about getting a geo-ban put in place?
The people most likely to lose out here are BF,because if South African's are not putting up the markets on BF for SA racing,no market will be established and the liquidity on SA racing will die.
Have BF fucked up royally here?Or is the geo-blocking some more P bullshit.
Personally I think it may be time to simply to close down racing in SA and only allow us to bet on harness racing and Ngong.
