TAB MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: TAB payouts
DATE: Friday 22 January
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

TAB has taken several steps to address the concerns of its customers about significant differences between Win and Place dividends displayed at the start of a race and final official payouts.
These include doing pool updates more frequently, commissioning an independent audit and ensuring that a major overseas customer bets earlier.
TAB recently completed a thorough investigation into the differences between dividends at the start of a race and the final official payouts. Phumelela and Gold Circle are satisfied that no bets are being placed into pools after the close of a race, but in order to further reassure customers independent experts are being commissioned to carry out an audit as soon as possible.
In general, the differences between payouts at the start of a race and the final official dividends are caused by the increasing volume of overseas bets taken just before the off into Win and Place pools on South African races. Overseas bets currently comprise more than 30% of Win and Place pools, but can be as high as 65% on a single horse in a race.
Big amounts are bet in the last few seconds and thus payouts shown at the start of a race can change significantly when the betting system does a final scan that incorporates the final bets.
All overseas totes commingling into TAB pools now transmit final betting data within 30 seconds of a pool closing. The only exception is Australia, which delivers final data 55 seconds after pools close. TAB has requested its Australian tote partners to seek ways of expediting the transmission of final data.
In order to limit the magnitude of the fluctuations, TAB’s tote system has since Monday 18 January been updating pools every 20 seconds compared to 60 seconds previously.
The TAB investigation has revealed that many of the major fluctuations in tote payouts result from last-minute bets taken by a single international customer. TAB has now taken steps to ensure his bets are placed earlier.
Horseracing and tote betting operators Phumelela and Gold Circle are fully aware that the integrity of TAB’s system is paramount to horseracing and all of the sport’s participants. Consequently, all controls in respect of betting are constantly monitored and Phumelela and Gold Circle will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure TAB retains the confidence of its customers.

Thats all good and well, but this "one punter placing late bets" still does not sit easy with me.

Now they say that they have asked the "Big punter" to place his bets earlier????????
If I was "Mr. Phantom" I would have told them to sod off!!!!!

Would you tell a guy who bets R25,000 a spin on roulette not to place late bets???? (When you have all the cameras in the world proving he is not past posting!?!?!?!?!?)

phum should've done this kind of PR the first time round, now so much damage in the customer trust....next thing they can do is to call for suggestions on how to solve the problem...they may even find a good solution coming from the floor

There are some issues where the facts don't match the explanations or the logic.
So we have one punter(a "HE" apparently-how do they know ?) who all on his own can adversely affect SAFTOTE so badly as to cause local punters to be prepared to boycott and thereby affect the stakes pool eventually bringing racing to a standstill? The only description we have so far is that he is overseas!.....that is a big place....nice and vague.... and he continues to lose money by virtually betting with himself.(if he is losing so much, some must be winning more...........on reduced payouts????)
WHY? Have "P" not asked themselves a hundred times....there is no logic...but believe me there will be an explanation.
Lets have some real answers:
1) who exactly do we co-mingle with?
2) will "P" disclose all future pools that will be co-mingled and with who(currency)(just like the blinker or alumite report) ---it is a fact that it affects payouts therefore customers are entitled to disclosure!
3)What currency is our Super punter betting with(or where does he operate)
4)is the "take out" for all local and co-mingled pools identical?

The reality, for me,is that the reasons are merely a curiosity...the situation is unacceptable and I will not support the tote until it makes sense to do so.I would not eat bad tasting food just cos I know why it tastes like it does.

Hi all,

There were no problems at all with the tote win bets for the Arlington meeting
yesterday. If Phumelela have identified the mystery punter (as they should have
done to satisfy FICA requirements), they simply need to explain to him that
placing his bets early will be to his advantage. If a 6/1 shot opens up paying
R1.80 for a tote win, everyone will jump into the other runners which will be
at inflated prices, and the market will find it's correct balance. The mystery
punter will then probably get a fair return on his bet.

Can you take a R20,000 bet in the last second at a local tote? It would surely
take at least 5 minutes just to count the cash, or would the TAB issue the
ticket without first making sure the money is correct?

I still believe the only solution is a big bet lockout in the last two minutes
before a race starts for win, place, swinger and exacta bets so that the forecast
dividends displayed retain their integrity.

Thats because there was little commingling on PE yesterday...AS Rob says they need to be tansparent and tell us who and on what days commingling occurs...

TAB Victoria has a open policy with this, they indicate the commingling meetings.

Greg i believe you can bet into SAF pools from Betfair, but i would imagine you wouldn`t get any guys with savvy punting on the SAF tote..

Wouldn`t mind knowing how much if any is placed from betfair?

When the UK racing was knackered with the weather at the beginning of the month Betfairs own markets on SAF racing got bigger although they were still tiny compared with the UK markets, and now the UK racing is back in full swing you can`t get 2 bob on again on Betfair..
