Apprentice Suspended for 1 year
The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an inquiry held at its offices in Cape Town on 29 January 2010, Apprentice Luke Coleman, assisted by Mr Chris Snaith, was charged with a contravention of Rule 77.1.1 in that when he presented himself at Kenilworth Racecourse to take part in Race 2 on 9 January 2010, when a sample of breath from a breathalyser test taken from him before the race was found to contain a concentration of alcohol of 0.060 milligrams per 100 millilitres, which is more than 0.024 milligrams per 100 millilitres allowed in terms of Rule 77.2.1, and a banned substance in terms of the Rules.
Apprentice Luke Coleman pleaded guilty to the charge.
The Inquiry Board found Apprentice Coleman guilty as charged and imposed a penalty of a one year suspension from riding in races.
Apprentice Luke Coleman has the Right of Appeal against the penalty.

This seems a tad harsh to me. Don't get me wrong, I hate alcohol and its effects but why was Johnny Geroudis not suspended for a year as well for his use of a mind altering drug????
Opinions please??

And Johnny G only got a few months?
How about Fortune for assaulting a fellow jockey after a race?
Apply the same standards across the board....

So he was just slightly more than double the permitted? or does it work differently?
You got to think they are trying to shock others with the harshness of this penalty, maybe the youngsters have been partying to strongly?

He should not be punished..he should be helped. Society is quick to punish people for an obvious illness but very slow to help. By suspending him will only add to his problems. We may hve seen the last of him in the sadle as if he is of weak character and has not the right people surrounding him, he may not bounce back. The one good thing is that he will still be able to ride work which hopfully will help him.

I agree Chicken......
They have just helped him out the pot, into the fire.
Why so harsh on the young people who will be forming the backbone of this industry in just a few short years.
Help the young man out and make sure he doesn't fall off the wagon again.
I just can't shake the feeling that suspending an appy likethis for 1 year....WOW, talk about overreaction.

And young Jethro Carter - Help is what they need - The industry spends a great deal of cash on training these guys/girls to ride so perhaps they should regard each one in "monetary' terms(perhaps it costs 100k per appy to train(I'm sure Elvis or Amaster could help here). Would you not try to save your investment? There have been a few cases in PE too if memory serves. They are young and live a life of stress and to a great extent celebrity and I have no doubt if I was in their shoes I'd be living it up. Mentorship and substance abuse councelling is needed - If this youngster is left to his own devices for a year I don't think he'll come back and the industry will be the poorer for it
