Jamaico was a lovely grey who sired some lovely greys, including two July winners (Jamaican Music and Jamaican Rumba).

Modern pedigrees owe a lot to 2 greys, Native Dancer and The Tetrarch. Native Dancer, described as a nasty calculating bully, was sire of Natalma, dam of Northern Dancer. The Tetrarch was voted Britain's best 2yo of the last century and source of speed despite only having 130 foals, one of them being Mumtaz Mahal, the original Flying Filly (also grey). One of Mumtaz Mahal's grandsons was the highly influential Nasrullah.

The first grey horse that made a real impression on me was Jamaican Music - a horse who lost his jockey whilst looking a winner in the July (Tom Rattley was the jock) and he manfully tried to jump back into the saddle.

My favorite grey was Alarm Call because I used to love how he would try to bite any horse that headed him or he coudn't run past. Made me laugh all the time

Jamaican Music has been my favourite grey. Talking of biting The Malster apparently had a pathalogical hatred of greys and some reckon that's why he won the Gold Cup - he refused to let Preciptack past and they reckon if the latter had started passing him he would've savaged him.

My favourite looking grey of my short career was the MDK trained Count Pahvli. He was a spectacular looking horse and he didn't run too badly either!

I may still have a video on Wolf Power, got it from Chris Gill (who was head of Computaform in those days) along with Mel Kaplan. In 1986 i wrote to Computaform, letting them know i was a big fan of their publication and wanted to know more about the making of it. i was only ten years old at the time and Chris Gill organised for me to be picked up from my flat in Berea..(in a merc nogal) and then i was taken to the Offices in High Street, Turffontein, where i spent the day learning all about the production of the books and looking through their years of archive fotoforms.(some of them were amazing)
I was presented with the Wolf Power video by Mr Gill, which had been made by Computaform and then after a lunch there was taken back home.. All in all it was an amazing day(one of the best days of my life) and made me an ever bigger fan of horse racing. I will never forget everyones kindness and surprise that a wee boy like me was so into racing.
Anyway its these type of things that make you take a keen interest in a sport as good as racing, but it wouldnt happen these days, which is sad. But i will always cherish that day when a young boy's dreams came true.
