What does "merit" mean? What does quota mean? Here is a rough explanation as interpreted by a blinkered SA
Merit: Only a white man can play the game. No black man can play the game without being forced in by quota's
Quota: A system to force talentless persons of colour into a sport.
Let me reverse the situation and help you analyse your thinking. I play soccer at a social level. We are a mixed team with the bulk of its players being white, playing against predominantly black sides. They all believe that we can never beat them as this is a black mans game and whites (including, Indian's and coloureds) do not have the same level of skill for this game. I recently gave blood and the black nurse asked me if I go to gym, I replied "no I play soccer". she laughed and replied "you cant play soccer". I left it at that. I have nothing to prove to ignorance.
There are many talented players in our history that have been marginalised through prejudice. There are perhaps many still being sidelined through lingering prejudice. The fact is demographically our population is drawn to different sports. We should not force the situation and we should also not believe that certain games can only be played by players of a certain ethnicity.

You oakes talk kak. Because they lost its now the quota system. I was lucky enough to be able to be in St Lucia and Barbados for the 20/20 and watching the players body language prior to the England game they were shitting themselves. When Pietersen got stuck in the game was lost. After the match it was obvious that SA missed a trick by only playing Botha and not two spinners they then stuck in Van Der Merwe, who in my opinion should never be given another game for SA, against the Pakistanis. SA were reactive in there selection of him when they should have been proactive and stuck Monre Morkel in. The Pakistanis kak themselves with fast aggressive bowling. The captain and coach must take the blame for the shocking performance and changes have to be made before 2011. Boucher is a passenger playing only on reputation. I came away from there feeling that I have been let down by the team that I support. As they said the two sides with the most players playing in the IPL, SA and India were shocking...too much cricket or too much money..you decide.

i am not blaming the quota system for south africas performance in the 20 20 ,but because of the quota system we are losing players to other countries which severly weakens our sport whether it be at provincial or national level and when will somebody answer my question ...when will our sport teams be solely chosen on merit just like every other country does?

What started out as a gimmick sport for a bit of a laugh is now being taken so seriously that its results should decide our future? Surely this sport was never meant to be taken seriously. The dancing girls on the side say it all. It's akin to a penalty shoot out in football. The only time you should get upset in this sport is if your guess bet on the outcome loses.
I agree with Pirates on quotas. The classic example was the selecting of Ntini for the test at Kingsmead against England when the conditions wouldn't suit him. They had to wait for him to perform dismally before they dared drop him.
Alcaponee I don't think there is a single white man in SAwho thinks, like you say, that people of colour can't play cricket and rugby. They've proved they can but those who are not performing should be dropped not only for the side but for their own good. How much damage has Dumini's career been done by persevering with him when he was so badly out of form that he desperately needed time out to go and rebuild his confidence elsewhere?

There are a miriad of problems with our sporting systems in this country, but one of the biggest is the inability of the talent scouts to recognize and nuture the talent that we have here.Mike De Kock is the perfect example of someone who has in fact got this right. He has a team who help him recognize talent in horses and then use their buying power to purchase that talent.Lizard's Desire and Irish Flame are perfect examples of that.Lizard's Desire has obviously improved beyond what anyone expected, but to take a horse from PE and turn it into an international champion is a truely amazing feat.It could never happen, but De Kock should be made SA sportsman of the year.
A friend of mine was telling me the other day that Aussie talent scouts are at our Craven week tournaments looking for the talent that goes unrecognized. He knows of a youngster that was not selected for the Craven week side who the Aussies snapped up immediately. He has been offered residency,is attending the Aussie rugby union academy and will in fact not be playing rugby for the next year. That is because he will doing all sorts of courses at the academy including psychology. We are simply not professional enough in the professional era,and the quota system is providing opportunities to other countries to poach our talent.Outside of rugby our performance at the highest level is abysmal. There is massive sporting potential in this country but our inability to nuture it correctly is our failing.
