Isnt it depressing to watch SA not even progress through the super 8's while OUR youngsters are winning the tournament for England? Jeeeeezz its been 16 years now, surely its time to to select teams on merit??

I read in the Sunday Times about 2 weeks ago that in a survey commissioned to determine young South African's attitude to the state of the country 59% of black teenage South Africans said they would leave the country if they got the opportunity to as opposed to only 33% of white youngsters,so I don't think that we only have a case of white disillusionment here.My 9 year old is adamant that this is his country and he will never leave, but unfortunately when the day comes that he has to make his own way in the world he may have no other option.Clearly those SAFA's playing for England felt the same.It is an extremely sad state of affairs.

I DON"T THINK WE CAN BLAME THE QUOTA SYSTEM.
WE WOULD NEVER PICK THOSE EX SAFS IF THEY WERE PLAYING IN S.A ,EXCEPT K.P. WHOM I THINK IS WORLD CLASS IN ALL FORMS OF THE GAME.WE NEED TO GET RID OF THE QUOTA SYSTEM IN THE SLECTION PANEL AND THE CAPT. SHOULD BE DROPPED FROM THE LIMITTED OVERS.

I agree with Die Hard, I don't think we can blame the debacle entirely on the quota system; in fact supporters of the quota system would argue that there actually are not enough 'players of colour' in the squad. However the fact that the 'experts' failed to recognize that KP has loads of talent and let him 'get away' is really hard to believe. I have always supported Graeme Smith in the past, but I think the fact that we were totally outplayed by England showed that the current squad does not cut it anymore and some changes need to be made starting with the captain - everybody has an off days now and then (I'm sure Afridi is still havong nightmares about giving that last over in the semi-final against the Aussies to a spinner), but Smith gives me the impression that he is unfit and on those all too few occasions nowadays that he does reach 50, he starts cramping; the question is who would be his successor - is somebody being groomed to be the next captain? It surely can't be Boucher or Kallis - both of them are probabably on their last legs as well; so which one of the younger guys can do it?

Cant blame the quota system. Blame the boetie or "old boys club" system. There are some highly talented players in our squad both of colour and not. Leadership is the issue. Ray Jennings should have stayed in the job and kicked the captains ass. You cant have a captain leading a coach around by the nose.
KP was in the opinion of the then selectors not good enough at the point of his depature. This has nothing to do with quotas. Cannot believe that quotas are even being discussed.

That's what I like about forums like ABC. People have different views on various topics can can form their own opinions. In this issue , I fully agree with Al. KP was not considered good enough to command a regular place in the Dolphins squad let alone the SA team. He jumped ship and the rest is history. ( a kick in the teeth to all that boo-ed him during the last english tour to SA).

I'm amazed at the furore caused by our performance at a Hit And Giggle cricket tournament aka 20/20 or a new version of baseball. Take a look at the below stats and then ask, what's the fuss about?
ICC Test Championship
31 Mar 2010 Team Matches Points Rating
India 38 4719 124
South Africa 38 4572 120
Australia 42 4979 119
Sri Lanka 31 3574 115
England 47 5063 108
Pakistan 25 2008 80
New Zealand 32 2541 79
West Indies 29 2224 77
Bangladesh 25 270 11
To think we also got there with a few passengers in the side too.
