FORTUNE DROPS HANDS, FINED, SUSPENDED

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an inquiry held in Johannesburg on 10 September 2010, Jockey Andrew Fortune was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.3, in that whilst riding AFRICAN LOVE (AUS
), in Race 2 run at Turffontein Racecourse on Saturday 4 September 2010, he failed to ride this horse out by putting his hands down approximately three strides before the finish line, thereby costing himself third place.

Mr Fortune pleaded guilty to the charge and was found guilty of the charge.

The Inquiry Board imposed a suspension from riding in race meetings for a period of one month, and a fine of R30 000-00, R10 000-00 of which is suspended for a period of twelve months provided that Mr Fortune is not found guilty of a similar offence in that period.

Mr Fortune has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I agree that Andrew was wrong and needed punishment, but does this punishment not seem AWFULLY severe taking into account the other recent fines handed down by the NHA???
WOW, R20,000 cash as well as a month on the sidelines?!?!?!?!?!?

I'm no expert, and once again I want to reiterate that I don't condone jockeys not riding out their mounts......but still I would have thought that the months suspension as well as a suspended fine would have done the job????

Seems to me that he could be targeted due to his past?

They have to be strict on jocks not obtaining the best possible position

I agree Bob, as mentioned above it is a serious offence, but I have not seen a fine so steep since last time I saw Andrew Fortune being fined.......No other jock gets such steep fines, IMO!

I just don't get Andrew Fortune.

How many chances can one man get ? I am convinvced that in any other racing juristriction worldwide Andrew would not have a licence. He has broken every rule in the book countless times. I will never forget about 12 years ago Andrew was riding a heavily backed favourite of Dereck Dalton's called Chelsea ....... He won the race by a head but lost it an objection for pelting Robert Sweetman with his crop.

One cannot blame all your problems on drug abuse. Since Andrew has been back he has been called into by the Stipes and told to ride to the finish. He might be in his forties but he still acts like a child. Jockeys like Cheyne, Marcus and Lloyd also make mistakes but not nearly as frequently as Mr Fortune. Now when you have your weight down to 54 kg's and are riding everyday then surely the last thing you want to do is incur the wrath of the stipes and sit on the sidelines once again.

Andrew is a fantastic jockey but drugged up or drug free he continues to be his own worst enemy.

Harris do you honestly feel that the punishment is justified??
In the 5 weeks of this season he has ridden in 187 races and this is his 2nd infringement the fact that he rides in way more races than any other jock makes him more susceptible to picking up suspensions which he accepts all that is expected is equal punishment/...

Lester Piggot jailed for tax evasion and rode again,Kieren Fallon was named in the betfair race fixing scandal and came up positive for cocaine and is still riding the 2 jocks involved in the Hong Kong debacle are still riding, in comparison to these Andrew's offences are small fry so I think your argument that he wouldn't be riding in "any other jurisdiction" is way off the mark

Unfortunately Andrew's past comes back to haunt him. Its the same in the real world. Get caught stealing a packet of chips and see the difference in the sentence between the 1st and 5 offense. Unfortunately for Andrew he has no margin for error and putting his hands down in a finish has been one fault that has plagued him his entire career.

I wish him well, but I do believe he has been treated fairly in this instance. He should be classified as a "serial offender." lol

just glanced over the postings and what comes to mind is, Fortune ......up, he cost the punters money, yes, but how many times has he improved on horses and made good on horses that wouldnt have won or placed with another rider, , if, as we believe, he is a great jock, also how much did the forth race cost us (the game) the other day far,far more than this, because here the backers of the third horse got paid and only fortunes backers lost on a place, the forth race offenders should have been punished far far more, then how about the sleeping stipes, they should be punished far, far worse then what about the sale of racecourses, those people should be punished far, far, far, worse and then what about......... and i could go on and on for hours about the ills of the game, Andys mistake is he dropped his hands, not good, but please where is the scale

when will they fine the jockeys that lose the race at the start - best way to lose the race on the fav...jump slowly..or like devlin...jump off and grap the starting stall post..
stipes did nothing...starter told me to keep my nose out of their business...pitty he was drunk...would have liked to shove his finger up his...THEIR BUSINESS...my money is their business...
jockey club did nothing..tex laughed.....devlin relocated to cpt..
I lost R250k....shame...
a year later he admitted the starter told him to make a plan...R10k...bookmakers money...

when will they fine the jocks that jump up and down on the fav (like the english jocks)...sure way to stop a fav...arse hitting the saddle every stride...horse cannot get into full stride..unbalanced...

time we appoint a watch dog over this...open a website...post the video's and comments...blacklist them...owners wont use them...no rides...go hungry...die of hunger...
