Agra chipped a bone, had surgery and is out for several months. Hope to get her ready for the Guineas.

Magic, you are wrong in your assessment about the relative merits between The Black Rose and Agra.

I like you and respect you, but you are a journalist and you have every right to phone Justin Snaith in such matters and ask him for his opinion. Then you don't have to guess!

I'm not geussing. I'm using Captain Dino as a line horse as he ran against them both and got a couple of lengths closer to The Black Rose than he did to Agra over the same course and distance. Whether that assessment will stand up only time will tell, but that's what handicapping is about. Exposed form, exposed form, and exposed form. Not trainer's opinions, not betting moves, and sure as hell not raw unadjusted times on different days (and even on different courses, which some people try to use).

I like to "handicap" horses for my own purposes and much prefer an objective approach.:)

When looking at exposed form, I agree we are not 'guessing' - however we 'assume' that Captain Dino ran the same sort of race each time - I would suggest that a trainer's opinion (especially in the case of juveniles who probably has worked alongside each other - not that 'work form' is the be all and end all either, but at least it gives another 'pointer') does hold at least the same value as our 'assumptions'?

There is another good two-year-old filly down here in KZN, Counter Ridge, who runs in a Non-Black type feature at Clairwood on Sunday. She beat a hot field of maiden juveniles on debut.

As a handicapper, I would not factor in the trainer's opinion. Horses can only be rated according to what they achieve in races, and it is well known that what they show at home is not always the same thing at all. There is always a degree of subjectivity in these things and of course my rating is based on Captain Dino having run the same race twice. I have to go on something, and Captain Dino appears to be consistent, but you may have a different take on the form. Nobody can predict the future, but in a match between the two Snaith fillies at level weights over 1000m I'd go with Agra. If she got her head kicked in, I'd review my ratings.
