I have only been an owner for a couple of years but i must say that horse racing seems to have a higher proportion of idiots than other industries...even after the owner has spoken people still commenting about things they know nothing about!!!

Barry, there will always be a degree of subjectivity and discretion in those circumstances. The best one can do is watch the race closely and guesstimate how much the horse had in hand. Add a length if eased up in the last 30m, or whatever. Each race has to be judged on its merits, and of course different people will come to different conclusions. Handicapping (in either the American or the British sense of the word) can never be an exact science. However, this allows for flexibility when rating races and horses, whereas any system that rigidly follows a weight-to-distance ratio without allowing for subjective factors can never really work.
Then you also have those horses that always seem to do just enough to win. They are also not easy to rate accurately. Yet it is an integral part of analysing form, and I guess that's why form students are called "handicappers" in America.

Magic, that quality you mentioned is what separates the men from the boys.

And difference of opinion is what makes horse races.
In every sphere, not just the punting side. Whether tyou are buying them, breeding them, rating them, backing them or whatever, there will always be a huge degree of subjectivity because of the unpredictable nature of the sport. Some are better at it than others, though.
