I only paid attention yesterday. So basically the players put up their own prize money and play for it while losing on the tote?

If I organised the exact same competition, and wrote the bets down on a piece of paper instead of playing them on the meat grinder, then
I could offer

Winner 600,000
2nd 150,000
3rd 100,000
4th 75,000
5th 50,000

And 25,000 for catering and venue?

And so we invent the concept of nothing for something...lol

I am nearly certain that a certain participant entered by the generosity of another participant. No prizes for guessing...

So who won it.....some banter from big hitters on the Betting World show says a few of them were in it......but they sure chose a bad day for the competition and I would salute any one who had a positive ballance at the end of the day.....:S

Was following the Champion Punter comp yesterday,not one person finished in a positive situation(they started with R20k balance & most only had a R1000 balance,or below,entering the last race.That is supposed people in the know like Soma,Tarry,deKock,Wainstein,etc.What cjance have we got in making money??? Impossible.I bet that Phumelela do not publish the results of that Competition!!!!

I have to assume that the concept of "champion punter" would suggest one who shows a profit.............the winner here was the one who showed the least loss!
Every sharp punter I know agrees the successful punting starts with the selectiion process which determines which races should be bet,how bets should be structured and which races to leave alone(ie no guessing)
The competition avoided all these requisites and IMO those rules ensured "mug" punter strategy.

As a fun thing ,I did my normal card assessment and spent R20,000 my way and showed a 15% profit on investment by way of Jpot and PA's....However in following their rules.......... I lost in the first race ,got it back in the second,was showing a profit after the 5th and gave it all back on races I would normally only watch!
The rules should allow a starting balance and closing balance,and that the R20,000 must be staked once..........that simple ..........and let the right strategy prevail.

Make sure the punters fund the whole competition(which admittedly is the poker way).Get them to turn over large sums of cash EVERY race.

you not seriously saying that no one had a positive balance.so all the entrants just lost their 20k betting money on the tote and they are pros.lol.how can this be good for growing the sport wen even the pros cant show a profit then how can the avg punter ever show a profit.lol.these guys at phumelela must all be brain dead to run a tourny like this wen it just shows that racing is not the best way to go if you want to make a profit.lol.

The balance of all punters added together at the end amounts to about 35k.add the 'prize money' of 600k and we are left with a total of 635k from the original 1 million.

Don`t forget the guys or gullible with disposable that they were trying to hook,imo the comp was immoral and probably violated their agreement with National responsible Gambling counsel

Was a shocking concept. I agree with Rob, no one can back the winner of every race they shoulfd have allowed for a betting strategy. Maybe had a minimum of 10% of the balance on each race.

It would have been a resounding success for the operators, great profit.
