Johannesburg - Taxpayers have paid R4.4m for furniture for the Gauteng premier's official residence over the past few years.
Former provincial premier Mbhazima Shilowa lived at the house between 2005 and 2009, when furniture worth R3.2m was bought, amongst others for a liquor and cigar bar.

When Mokonyane moved in, she removed the bar and cigar bar and replaced it with a dining room and living room.

All five bedrooms got new linen and curtains. A new TV unit, coffee tables, beds, mattresses and couches were also bought.

This was revealed in an answer by the provincial department of infrastructure development in response to a question by the DA.

Mokonyane’s spokesperson said the provincial department determined how much was spent on the house.

“Her official home is state property and therefore renovations are determined through a process of analysis, planning and budget,” said Thebe Mohatle.

Shilowa’s furniture would be sold at an auction

The DA’s Jack Bloom said the R4.4m of furniture that had been bought for the home since 2005 was a huge waste of taxpayer’s money.

“About 15 RDP homes could be built for the price of Mokonyane’s smart furniture.”

We are a country with a select few wealthy individuals and a massive amount of poor, under resourced communities who cannot even afford to get by on the most basic level. The question of 'how long can it last' should be more relevant to those wealthy few and definitely not the whole country.

I was in utter shock on Sunday when I visited a RHODES PARK in Kensington. I spent my youth at this park playing sport, swimming, Fishing etc. The pool has not been opened since 2007 and the rest of the place looks like a war zone.
I find it disgusting that the new generation(mostly black kids) that have never had access to a facility like this are denied the privilege of using this park in the manner that it was intended.
Shame on the ANC for allowing such a important recreational facility to be destroyed and thereby telling the youth that they don't deserve what the whites had years ago. Don't talk about no budget or job creation when you can't even keep the grass cut yet you feast on wine and caviar. How you can hold your own youth back is beyond me and should be regarded as an Act of Treason.

Well said Greg, play the Apartheid card for everything, doubt Mandela would been happy of his successors - they looking out for themselves when Mandela looked out for others, big bridge to cross for Zuma to cross if he want to be half the president Mandela was...

Dono how Zuma was pre apartheid, but he definitely aint freeing the masses of poverty, only freeing those within govt positions...

Think his ways have been swayed with power.
