We're corruption-busters, says Zuma

Pretoria - The fight against crime was more intense in South Africa than it was in many other countries, President Jacob Zuma said on Saturday.

"Fellow South Africans, I must underline here that of all the countries that I know of, very few compare to South Africa in the effort to fight corruption," Zuma said.

"In other countries nobody talks about [fighting] corruption. We fight corruption here. We are more in the media because we fight corruption. We declared war against corruption and we are making progress."

He said corruption will not be allowed to steal the fruits of freedom.

Zuma was addressing thousands of people gathered at the Union Buildings in Pretoria for the annual Freedom Day commemoration.

"By the end of December 2012, criminal investigations were initiated against 237 persons by the task team [justice, crime and prevention security cluster's anti-corruption task team] and 21 staff members within the criminal justice system were convicted."

Zuma said a total of 718 people are currently under investigation for "corrupt activities".

"Freezing Orders to the value of more R1bn have been obtained," he said.

Encouraging signs are the levels of disenchantment giving impetus to (like them or not) to the formation of parties / groupings, that want to tackle the weaknesses of the ANC leadership.

1.
Agang; Dr Ramphele's (a BC graduate) party that is looking at clean government (what will appeal to the ANC mass base is more of socialist / nationalisation / Freedom Charter rhetoric). Her drawback is her corporate background which she has to dilute with the circumstances on the ground;

2.
WASP; the Workers and Socialists Party which can capitalise on the Marikana tragedy (and confrontations between COSATU and the new union which is not Solidarity aligned). Their support base should be restricted to workers and there is a huge question about their leadership; unknown quantities with limited exposure and experience. However, it will dent some support of ANC (vis a vis COSATU NUMSA);

3.
SAFirst; disgruntled MK veterans want to sort the ANC leadership! Again, a party that will be confined to a sector only.... and might eat into the ANC base.

Overall, we do not have a credible leader / party that will appeal to the mass as the ANC artillery and machinery does. COPE, having started out with the Freedom Charter, and then abandoned it, is proof of this limited erosion of ANC power / support base.

Besides, the opposition parties are in complete disarray and in 'opposition' amongst themselves in terms of ideology and policies. None of the DA or BC parties (AZAPO, PAC, SOPA, etc) will acknowledge / support / dilute aspects of the Freedom Charter, or mention nationalisation (we not talking Communism!) worth looking into, albeit strategic / limited, now that the ANC has virtually jettisoned them.

Maybe, at forums like this, we can contribute towards a cohesive and acceptable reconciliation and solution?
