What's the problem guys, I see it all the time...you R infanct all correct. Rape/murder and so forth no good person agrees to. Black / White come on this crap we moved on a long time ago...the topic is grooms strike, as any other discipline if they not happy they have the right to at least be heard. Not saying the striking is the answer but then again, you the boss man and some poor understudy tries to make some demand, R you even gonna take them seriously and bother giving a reasonable answer. We sometimes the maker of our own crap!

Oh, this is a forum and you all entitled to your view, go to Wikipedia and search the word "forum"

Hope that puts some clarity to all the bickering >:D<

@ou ryperd:

'Humble apologies.

Won't post on this topic again.'

No need to apologise; as Titch noted, it's in the system in all of us.... black, brown or white. As much as we try to keep our control, occasionally, we lose it- often for the wrong reason, person or incident. That's human.

Let's promote peace, understanding and mutual respect. There is this very wide chasm amongst many of us as posters for even a blind person to see. Let's not stick our heads in the sand; say it aloud and get it out! But show respect!

What brings us together is the thread (pun?) of commonality (horseracing / punting). We have here a unique community from all colours of our rainbow; each has an equal right to reciprocal modicum and respect.

Amen!

:)-D

Tigershark & Umlilo, if you dont know who i am, my name is Terry Fripp. I first worked for trainer Johnny Dawson as a GROOM in 1989. Why?? Because i couldnt find a job in the industry i had a a PASSION for. I earned exactly the same as the other grooms in the yard, had to pay rent where i lived(my collegues lived rent free on site in summerveld), i looked after 3 horses & took them to races. Black or White, if one wants to improve or progress in this industry, it can only be done through dedication and perserverance. Many grooms have moved up and are really good stable employees and assistant trainers. Grooms in South Africa can and do present themselves on course looking good because they have pride in themselves. I have grooms in my stable that earn a good wage, but groom A will look smart but groom B will forever be scruffy. Ive worked in Dubai, France, England, Russia, Norway & Sweden and all performing duties as a groom, assistant trainer, track rider all in one.
Bottom line, if one has the will power to progess in life, only the individual can do it. No union or grooms association will.

The problem....as with a lot of jobs in RSA....too many people in for the money and none in it for the career...
I've read Englanders first post....(tu)
and Craig's first post...(tu)
there are too many people who only "join" to get an income....
the Police...other parastatals...you name it....farking up the country...
I believe passion should be the minimum requirement....
Ziets hits the nail on the head....(tu)
Kalahari...brings a lump to my throat....
Umlilo...says it like it is...(even though it's not what we always want to hear....)

it's like all the rest....
some grooms need to earn a lot more.....
some need to be fired....
some useless people (majority) hide behind the Unions....

@kalahari:

explanation lies in my earlier comment-

'one does not learn at management / motivational schools; the University of Hard Knocks only!'

Further, I am intrigued by your...

'...had to pay rent where i lived(my collegues lived rent free on site in summerveld),..'

Why didn't you live rent free also on site at Summerveld (like Bad Company)? Give us an honest answer (I am not trying to embarass you).

That answer (whether you give it or not) is what makes the situation of our grooms distinctly 'different' from what applies all over the world.

I re-read my post and realised.....what I meant is that some people only join the police and parastatals...to get a job...their heart is not in it.

(I did not mean to offend anyone.)

Umlilo, the answer is simple. I had a home 15km from work which i shared with other collegues who also worked with me. I don't get embarrased, and also say it as it is.
