I heard of it from someone who works indirectly and closely with the tote. Here's how it works, you take the bet, the teller writes the perm out, cancels the ticket and follows the perm in the hope it doesn't come in. If it does arrive, the teller puts the money back in the float and blames the computer as s/he still balances at the end of the day. Worst case scenario, the teller gets fired and the tote does not have the time or manpower to pursue the criminal case.

bayern this is not accurate. firstly not every teller can do the cancelation it is normally only one machine in the tote. second every cancelation of bet must have the original ticket and this should be audit at end of day. so when tote operator balance up and bring the money at day end she also bring the cancelations. if she dont there is problem. my daughter do tote teller when she is in varsity and i confirm with her now. this was the huge problem 20 year ago but no now.

Correction Flash, i have seen an operator put thru a bet requested for R20-- but incorrectly heard as 20 x with the resulting amount showing about R4,000--.
The operator was hurriedly able to cancel the bet and retake the R20-- reqest:

FH, this was relayed to me within the past 24 months, maybe the controls are a lot tighter. By not handing in the cancelled ticket, the teller would still balance.

bayern i speak with my daughter. it is not true that the teller will balance at the end of day. the final report that the teller use gives the total turnover, total payout, total cancelations, total money paid in to cashiers, total money withdraw from cashier. so for example if the cancellation for day is 2500, the teller must supply the 2500 tickets that is cancel. capice?

Couple years back, I played a multiple quartet which was a winner.
When I went to cash, they said it doesn't show on the system. Yet, the numbers (sequence) for the winning combination was correct; they refused to pay.
I took it up with the Gambling Board. The matter ended up unresolved and I decided not to waste time for a R200-odd.
BUT, that happened!

@ Umlilo
Looks like the bet was either cancelled or the ticket cashed by someone else.
Or was it neither of the above, that would be really puzzling.:S

that is almost impossible as the teller would need the bar code number on the ticket to cancel the bet as the punter has the ticket.

Not really, the ticket details still remain on the screen after the punter has walked away and can be copied or even cancelled even if the poor punter holds the original.
I have had a situation when presenting a winning ticket to cash and told it's not paying yet, however once the ticket is scanned and the details remain on screen, it can be cashed by the teller WITHOUT your consent or original.

mike you are not 100% correct. every ticket has the reference number on it that can be manually punched into the machine it the scanner dont read this. I am told it is the 16 number code for example 1234-5678-9012-3456. the numbers identify the course and bet type in the first 8 numbers and the last 8 identity the individual bet. so as example every clairwood bet today is 1234 and every clairwood jackpot start with 1234-5678. so in theory if you take a jackpot today the teller now the first 8 number already he must get the last 8 and can cancel if he is being crook. as i say before this become problem in the past and the extra measure is taken with only certain machine can cancel and every cancel bet original must be kept for audit.
it can be done but i feel will be found very quickly
