Joey's blog
It has been the most wonderful Easter weekend. On Sunday the Easter Bunny raided our house and left a huge amount of easter eggs at our house. How the little fellow manages to carry all the eggs and visit all the little boys and girls, I really can’t imagine. He is a miracle to me. At some point he must have met our rabbit, Nibbles, up the chimney because that is where Nibbles spends his life these days. Maybe Nibbles even helped him go round our complex and deliver his easter eggs. If he did, there would be some teeth marks in the little children’s chocolate eggs as Nibbles is addicted to chocolate (and electric wires). The inevitable has not yet happened – here’s hoping.
Easter Monday arrived wet and windy. I felt very sorry for whoever was organising the easter festivities at the races as the traditional easter rains came and left the easter egg hunt washed out. I rallied my girls to stick their elbows out and give it their best shot. However, competition was tough on the hunt and sadly, they could not land one egg. A bit like me at the races last November, they came home empty handed. Most disappointing.
The horses all ran great and for once, I managed to have a few bob on a winner. An absolute rarity indeed and was rather nice.
I am totally disinterested in technology as my cell phone will tell most people. I do have an ipad but I switch that on maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks which is not much use to anyone who sends emails to my personal address. All I can do is apologise. I use my wi-fi to read the daily mail online, thus enabling me to enjoy the sport. Every now and then I go on to the African Betting Clan just to see what the world is talking about. Whatever I would have to say would be way too rude to publish so is probably best left alone. However, there was one article that did stick in my mind. A certain trainer was talking about statistics and how he was chatting to one of the Gold Circle directors and telling him how a top Cape trainers had applied for the new stabling at Summerveld. Well, as Mike Bass has left extremely annoyed at Clairwood so I very much doubt it is him, Dean Kannemeyer might be well be going, I certainly am not and I know Vaughn Marshall would not be applying for full time boxes at Summerveld so I am not sure which of the top trainers this leaves. John McDonald maybe? I am not sure where he manages to obtain and write such drivel. He obviously regards these statistics along with the level of his own personal statistics which, when I went on the NHRA website, I found it absolutely remarkable that someone who regards himself as the voice of racing in Kwazulu-Natal should ever put pen to paper or finger to notepad to type anything at all. His opinions, judging from his results, are totally irrelevant. From what I have seen of his results and statistics, he is someone who should surely be concentrating more on getting a few winners than trying to educate the average man or the African Betting Clan. I found it absolutely mind-boggling that someone who is doing so badly would have such a high opinion of himself and what others should be doing. Quite remarkable. There you go. Maybe I worry about my own statistics too much but if I had his statistics, I think I would be shutting down.
The last thing I ever wanted to do was claim that I even read the African Betting Clan but there is a very pleasant Scots fellow I speak to every now and then who is good fun. As I said, I only ready this about once every 3 weeks so I guess the trainer in question was unlucky that I managed to catch his blog about statistics. Or maybe it was just an April Fool’s joke? If it was, well, he caught me hook, line and sinker. Well done to him.

:( i dont think this is fair look like the cape and natal will never kiss and make up. i enjoy joey website but this time he go to far

One of the reasons I am pulling out. Have never attacked him personally and would never do that to a fellow trainer especially in a forum or the press and would not expect him to do the same especially after it was an April fools joke and it was shown to be that at just after 12pm. Maybe it makes him feel good to have a go at a smaller trainer that has not had the opprtunities he has had. Good luck to him then if he needs to do that. I wonder who will be next? All I have tried to do is help those who are not at the coal face and dont understand the way racing works and or GC's decisions. Thats all.

Question...

If it is all trainer, then how come doesn't MDK have a 100% win record
If it is all jockey, then how come doesn't Anton have a 100% win record

In my opinion, the horse itself plays a big factor, the jockey and trainer too plays a big factor... to the percentages I cannot say

There are many factors / combinations that would make a good horse great and a good horse mediocre

It is a trainer / jockey that brings out the horses ability and a horse only has so much ability...
some horses

Sure MDK is one of the best trainers in the country, and his record proves just that!
BUT when, he is travelling i.e. Meydan, who was looking after the yard in his absence? How many winners came out the stable while he was not around?

If Craig was a bad trainer, he would not have a % of winners the fact that he knows something about training horses gives him the % of winners - if he had a bigger string, maybe that % would be higher / lower - however some trainers don't have the luxury to tell owners to take your poor horses and go, they must make due.

---

slightly off topic, when me an a mate where laaities, we were very competitive in running / swimming - I always use to beat him, then he started going to swimming lessons and that, he ended up representing KZN at a few events, I did not through the fact that he was taught the correct techniques etc... so to dismiss trainer / horse and other members involved in ones preparation is also utter rubbish...

Maybe im a fool i never once said Craig is a bad trainer-
i acually said in comments he is a good trainer.all i said and will always say the trainer of a horse is worth a lot more than 10 %
and not Craig or any other trainer will change my mind.
If you think the last post offended you im sorry and appologize ,im not sure what part offended you but i appologize..

Maybe start a post and let all members on this forum vote there opinion as to what the think is the success of a horse the trainer or the horse or phrase it better do horses need good trainers.

The same way any body can have an opinion about the values of a trainer i still am allowed my own opinion regaurding trainer and horse.

Richie anyone can train a soccer team but success keeps you in your job
Roman thinks the manager is very important but what does he know hes only one of the cleverst and shrewdest in the world.
Some managers get sacked cant win a game team in relegation suddenly HOUDINI arrives saves relegation keeps team up and you say anyone can train ..
you sure Managers mean nothing and thats about managing a battling team not Chelsea Barca with money.

To all:

Not only the horseracing industry.... even amongst under-graduates and actuaries!

Read the ff article in the STimes (My Brilliant Career) on Roshan Bhana.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to be an actuary?

'One of my colleagues- and a good friend- failed in his first year of university. Our lecturer told him to consider an alternate career, because he WOULD NEVER BECOME AN ACTUARY (my emphasis)!
Despite this initial setback,my colleague persevered and has since qualified and is now working for the regulator, thus regulating an industry he was not good enough to be part of.'

Note the parallel?

anybody that thinks managers/trainers play no role in any sport/business is an idiot.

I spoke to eudey yesterday and that conversation remains private but we did agree on one or 2 points i made and vice versa.

Here is the deal and zenyatta is correct

1: i was involved with 2 branches of mimmos in the 90's, both had same footfall to start but slowly one went out and the other propspered. Reason manager
2: Apple went through a faze of turmoil, steve jobs came back managed it his way end result HUGE dough
3: Jake White takes over a struggling rugby team end result they improve 10 fold

certain people are better managers than others, that is for sure. a better manager will obviously have the skills to surround him/her self with people that fill in his/her failings. Thus building a team around them that becomes formidable.

Mathew lips is the form guru of sa. a good race horse trainer might not bea good form studier, so if the 2 work together surerly the trainer improves. the thing is the call has to come from the trainer seeking help.

now some trainer i know do call mathew for advice from time to time. But lets look at our forum members , ill pick on Rob Faux and Pirates to start.

1: If Rob Faux worked for ANY stable out of the top 5 in SA as a nominations expert/horse placer would that stable's stats imrpove
2: If Pirates worked for ANY stable out of the top 5 in SA as a nominations expert/horse placer would that stable's stats imrpove

NOW i think the answer is an emphatic YES.

Yet the call still has to come from themanager/trainer that thinks his form skills are weaker than his training skills.

IT CANNOT BE 90% about the HORSE/PLAYER/PIZZA/PRODUCT

I think Joey is telling a porkie pie here. He probably reads the site often. Why does he not want to claim that he does not read the site often. is he ashamed to say he does... I think being personal with Craig is poor taste . Common play the ball not the man. This game is a great leveller. Dont be so aloof Joey. At least Craig shares info on Gold Circle. Nothing wrong with educating the common man as this is a common man's game. Too many porky pies Joey and you wouuld soon be mistaken for JMD.

Easy you are correct i keep saying i believe 50 % of the success of a horse is placing the horse in the correct races,

Mike Bass did a great job eg Pocket Power

As a 3 year old Mike new he had a good horse but decided to leave it in the Cape.
Won the triple crown winter series.

Not many trainers would have left him in the Cape and leave the big Durban races out.

I am not going to attack trainers and say who are good or bad but some are definetly clueless and would serve better working in the post office than training a horse.

Sean Tarry has done a great job and was the first to comment how much he learned from his experience with Mike De kock and De Kock openly helping him/
Woodruff always says how valuable Terances imput was.

Some trainers are thought of as good Sprint trainers others as good stayers . so if its not the trainer and only the horse then why think some are better at one or the other.
Chezney Van Zyl is starting to look the real deal hes young hard working learning and turning the light out.

What makes him so good the horses , i dot think so hard work
Slumdog Millionair needed to win a race get some cofidence back and they found just the race to win were he was handicaped a cert.

Next time he comes on TV and says Slumdog is flying.
The rest is history.
How many times i have seen a trainer ruin a horse s career by placing him in wrong races getting a very high rating and having to wait 18 months to get the horse back in the correct rating.

Anyway each can believe what they want.

Imagine how good the Stormers would be under Jake.
Nick Mallet was also ordinary but took us to first win in the tri nations.
Lions rugby flourishing with current management.
Kevin De Klerk should be the new manager of the Springboks as the managewrs job can be done by anybody.

South Africa were twice knocked out of cricket World Cups because of great management,

but then again anybody can train and manage as the manager and trainer play such a small part.

Well this post is like Ripleys Believe It Or Not
