Congrats to Piere Strydom ... it's been a year to remember for him. SA champ jockey and now an international championship as well.

Pity the SA media will totally ignore all this ... if it had been football it would have gotten five-inch headlines.

Johnny, do you mean "Losers compile the headlines" or "Losers get into the headlines"? If it's the second, I beg to differ. Unless you're referring to some particular loser, of course, then I dunno.

Soccer was not as fortunate as rugby and cricket to arrange rebel tours and pay players inflated salaires to play in SA. The numbers of years lost due to soccer isolation will not and cannot recovered in record time. Soccer is a game for the masses in SA hence the affordable price of R40 a ticket for a league game and +/- R100 for a Bafana match. Compare that to a minimum of R300 for a rugby Test match then you know what I mean.

People always bitch about the failure of Bafana but don't realise that they are just small fish in a big pond. Football development strucures are poor and needs improvement but the constant mocking by people who have never played or showed an interest in soccer will certainly not help.

How many qualifying games do the Boks or Proteas play in order to qualify for the world cup finals? None. Then, compare them to Spain(No1 ranked fotballing nation) and Bafana(59th) who play at least 8 matches for qualification.

The Football World cup consists of 32 countries, rugby 16 and cricket 12.

The Citizen newspaper which is supposed to be thee racing publication confines racing to it's middle pages. Phumelela subsidies them to hide racing so how do you expect Striker to be headline news?

Bushy, I don't want to fight with you and you are entitled to your opinion. But re soccer, SA are not small fish in the African pond. They are not short of cash to get anything they want - see for instance at least one international-standard coach.

I don't see what the number of contestants has to do with lack of soccer success. Yes, Test cricket nations are only few in number but they are most of them highly competitive ... that's what matters. Numbers by themselves don't matter, and neither does having to play qualifiers. I'm not sure why you brought these facts up. Are they relevant to lack of publicity for our international racing successes?

And bringing in cricket at all was a red herring ... I was comparing racing with soccer. I don't know what cricket or rugby have to do with their amount of coverage by the media.

Let me re-state what I was trying to say: If Bafana had a big international win it would be in all the media, print and electronic, within minutes, and would be given a lot of airtime/inches. If Striker wins a jockey's International competition, or if one of our horses wins an International Grade 1 race, it will go utterly unmentioned.

I've got my own ideas as to the reasons for this, and they don't include anyone paying anyone else.

Tbf To Mav the only front page news i have read about racing in recent years have been , Piggot getting the tin pale for tax evasion, Frankies coke ban, Fallon stopping horses and The Goldolphin scandal.

Soccer deserves to be on the front pages , not sure about Rugby and Cricket though .
