RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

Brandon Lerena will fly into Cape Town on Saturday to renew his association
with Along Came Polly in the Grade 2 Choice Carriers Championship at
Kenilworth. He rode the Gavin van Zyl-trained filly to victory in the Grade
1 Thekwini Stakes at Greyville at the end of last season and was aboard her
for the first time when she beat all but For The Lads in the Grade 1 Golden
Slipper on Vodacom Durban July day.
Van Zyl has booked Bernard Fayd’Herbe for his other runner, the Listed
Devon Air winner Mohave Princess. Fayd’Herbe won this race three years ago
on Ebony Flyer and went on to partner her to victory in the Avontuur Cape
Fillies Guineas. However, Mohave Princess is badly drawn, on the outside of
the 16-strong field, and her stable companion has not fared much better at
No 13.
Justin Snaith, who trained Ebony Flyer and also won this with subsequent
Fillies Guineas winner Captain’s Lover in 2007 as well as with Townsend two
years later, runs three. Stable jockey Richard Fourie is on In The Fast
Lane and Muzi Yeni rides Trippissa while Sean Cormack gets the call for
Highly Decorated.
Mike Bass also runs three, with first jockey Grant van Niekerk taking the
mount on Alascan Maiden (fourth in the Thekwini and runner-up in the Devon
Air) and Karl Neisius partnering Pure Power, who won the Listed
Irridescence Stakes last season. Robbie Fradd, who won the Gold Cup for
Bass on Jeppe’s Reef, has been called up for recent Durbanville winner
Lanner Falcon.
Stable companion Princess Ofthesky is only first reserve and Van Niekerk
reported to the stipes that she “took no interest in running” when she
finished fourth to Run Like Hell in a 1200m novice plate at Kenilworth last
Wednesday. However, the duty vet could find nothing wrong.
Masked Lady, who was having her first race of the season when third in that
novice plate, represents Glen Kotzen who won this two years ago with the
high-class Princess Victoria. Masked Lady was third in the Golden Slipper,
as well as the Allan Robertson, but JP van der Merwe’s mount is another who
has fared badly in the draw.

Avontuur Estate

One of South Africa’s premier racedays will be held at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday 7 December. It is the race that every owner and breeder of a smart filly wants to win and the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas will be run for an increased stake of R1 million this year. It is sponsored for the eighth time by champion breeders, Avontuur Estate.

The Avontuur Estate Fillies Guineas raceday has established itself alongside the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate as an elegant and sophisticated racing and social occasion that caters for the racing purist and the socialist, alike.

It is a day of understated glamour and elegance, where the focus remains firmly on the high quality horse racing. Fashion, wine and great entertainment combine seamlessly with the on track action, to produce a memorable day out. The illustrious honour roll over the years includes champions like Sun Classique, Captain’s Lover, Sparkling Gem, Field Flower, Ebony Flyer, Princess Victoria and last year’s unbeaten Rumya.

Speaking after the stakes increase was announced, Avontuur’s Michael Taberer expressed his delight. “It’s really great that we can raise the calibre of participants in the race in this way, and thereby highlight the excellent work done over the years by the Avontuur team and all our supporters to establish the event on the racing calendar. It’s an endorsement of our intention to grow the race and we look forward to a new era of even better racing.” Read more by clicking banner below

Avontuur Race Day sets the tone for the Summer of Champions
Saturday, 7th December will see the launch of Kenilworth Racing’s Summer of Champions with the Avontuur Cape Fillies Guineas and Intercontinental Village. Kenilworth Racecourse will be transformed into a carnival of cultures, live entertainment for the whole family and top South African racing.
Avontuur Estate, the award-winning winery and thoroughbred stud farm from the Helderberg area between Somerset West and Stellenbosch presents the eighth R1 000 000 Gr 1 Cape Fillies Guineas.
Over the years the steady growth of the event, has drawn more support from both the racing fraternity and the public, and it is now one of the most versatile racing events on the calendar, as well as being the first big day of the Cape’s Summer of Champions.
“With everything from formal, elegant racing to festive fun our Fillies Guineas race day is truly a unique offer and we are excited to expand even further this year" says Avontuur’s Michael Taberer. “From the beginning the day has had free entrance to all race lovers and their families with kiddies entertainment in the gardens of the race course, and various options in the grandstand”
The 2013 event offers various experiences, tailor-made to accommodate everyone who’s keen to enjoy a day at the races. Nine nationalities including Italy, Portugal and Thailand will showcase traditional cuisine whilst each of the nationalities nominated charities will benefit from the R100 000 pool which is up for grabs. Crowds will enjoy live entertainment throughout the day in either the beer garden or kid’s carnival.
Kenilworth Racing’s marketing manager, Jenna Adams commented “The roll out for the Summer of Champions is set to reignite the atmosphere of racing in the Western Cape and there is no better way to showcase what the season holds this than the Avontuur race day”

Avontuur Race Day Is Also About Giving Back To Our Community.
Saturday, 7th December will see the launch of Kenilworth Racing’s Summer of Champion's Grade One races with the Avontuur Cape Fillies Guineas. The race course will be transformed into a carnival of cultures, with live entertainment for the whole family and top class South African racing.
The Avontuur Cape Fillies Guineas and Intercontinental Village extends beyond a great horseracing spectacle as the day is also based on charities and upliftment. Over the years the steady growth of the event sees more support from both the racing fraternity and public, and it is now one of the most popular racing events on the calendar, as well as being the first big day of the Cape’s Summer of Champions.
“With everything from elegant fashion, high class racing and festive fun - our Fillies Guineas race day is truly a unique offering and we are excited to expand even further this year" says Avontuur’s Michael Taberer. “From the beginning, we’ve offered free entrance to all race lovers and their families, with special kiddie’s entertainment in the gardens surrounding the track and tempting hospitality options in the newly upgraded grandstand”
The 2013 event offers various experiences tailor-made to accommodate everyone who’s keen to enjoy a day at the races. Eight nationalities including Italy, Portugal and Thailand will showcase traditional cuisine and nominate charities they chose which will benefit from the R100 000 pool up for grabs. Each charity is represented by a horse in the feature race, all of whom will receive a donation from Kenilworth racing. The charities are matched to a horse at the Final Draw on 28th November 2013.
Each of the eight represented communities selects a charity of their choice as do our media partners, 16 charities in total.
1st prize is 30k
2nd prize is 20k
3rd prize is 10k
4th prize is 4k
5-16 each receive R3k
