Great reading (tu)
My own 'fairytale' does not really compete - must have been late eighties or early nineties - still at Gosforth Park - I had 'invested' in a P6 for R12 (no fractional betting those days) - survived the first 5 legs and had a Tony Millard horse (it was called Royal Thunder if memory serves - running in black and white - I think for a Mr Elphick :S) as a banker in the last at around 4/1; only real opposition was a filly (I think) ridden by Striker for Jan Breedt) which was backed to favorite; I was at the track and took a small cover on the Breedt filly - was so exited when Royal Thunder (under Jeff Lloyd I think) winning easily by a couple of lengths that I threw my Computaform up in the air (never to see it again) - and collected 15k for my R12
Another story involving numbers - my wife and I went down to the July - must have been early 2000's :S spent a couple of nights at GIants Castle and got on the N3 towards Durbs - first offramp / bridge we came to had some numbers scribbled on it (can't even remember what they were), but my wife proceeded to box those numbers in a swinger in the third race - and promptly picked R185 for her R6
And then there is the Asylum Seeker story ...........but I'll save that for another day; suffice to say I hope Traveller's Cheque can produce her own memories starting today :

Was still at school but used to ride work for different trainers in the school holidays and weekends
Won about 19 pounds and got my older brother who had just started work for I think 8 pounds a month
to bet for me.Took a double 10x at 1 pound each
First leg arrived and I told him he could have 1 ticket 2nd led 25 to 1 and home
Pool was 1400 pounds winning tickets 11 My piece 1280 less 10 pecent to my brother
Kept our mouths shut and nobody could understand the dividend
The trainer of the 25 to 1 shot could not work it out but I had told him the horses work had improved and
the extra 4 furlongs would be in its favour
Years later I admitted to him I had won the money and he said"wheres my chop"

circa 1989 myself and 2 mates don habib and pdc drive to sun city to watch irene cara
don is in the back and most of the way there he talks about 1 thing
Gold Mark next saturday winning the nursery
the thursday before the race at Q's we hook up and are joined by another friend rambo Vermaak (i think was the night i introduced him to his wife)
Rambo wants to hear nothing of Gold Mark (Budwin Nassif ) has promised him a brand new M3 if he wins with his horse (can't remember the name)
Donavan laughs, we all get dronk but the general feel is Gold Mark is something special
Race day
at the course with my own cash, my fathers cash and cash from a few customers from his restaurant
heavens open up just before the race but horses are at the start
i back Gold Mark and because heavens open i take double into Kadarko (stephen the master jupp)
Rambos horse plays up at the start, i think may even have been scratched
Gold Mark wins very very well and goes on to become the BEST horse Striker has ever ridden (his words)
We jump for joy , i "rent" an umbrella from a biltong salesman to collect money from bookies and stay dry
back to the stands to watch Kadarko and Stephen romp home in the derby
re hire the umbrella not for R5 anymore but for R50 from a gobsmacked biltong salesman
collect thousands
don't bother to collect jackpot till the monday
the whole lot of us go to supper in a restaurant in glen vista somewhere i mean the whole lot, all the habibs a few leishers many geias, and 2 porras..ourdistrught friend Frikkie Vermaak.....maybe 60 people
then to caesars palace braamfontein or q's i can't remember really because after 5 pm nothing mattered anymore......

My story doesn't involve myself but rather my dad. After they had upgraded and installed the new tote system at TAB transvaal they had to test the bets. The first bet to be tested by him was the jackpot.
He decided to play 4 1's. 1, 1, 1, 1.
They all arrived like soldiers and the bet paid R24,000
Sometimes it pays to know something, sometimes it pays to be lucky

1993 Durban Merchants
Prince of War
Midnight Run
Winnetka
Took a R21 trifecta and R10 swinger, My Gran liked Price of War and could not stop talikng about it, won R5 500 and booked a holiday to the Maldives. Good cash at 23 years old....
2005 Wanted to give up owning, 1 winner and 5 no hopers later..... My wife suggested i buy a horse on my own and phoned the trainer. Went up to the yard to have a look at a bay colt and she started laughing when she heard his name. (Name was similar to that of the Gran i had just lost, the same second name of my then baby daughter). My wife wrote a cheque (R40k) for the horse and six months training fees upfront.
He ran third first time out at Scotsville, flew my wife down to Durban as we had moved to JHB at the time, i was in a board meeting and they wheeled a TV in so that i could watch.
A month later i flew down to DBN to watch him run at Clairwood, won by 4L in a new class record time. That night my wife and i celebrated when i got back to JHB.
He was entered in the Gold Medallion at the end of May and ran an absolute cracker, he won beating Divine Jury and Sovereign Circle.
Following that win the phone did not stop ringing and following his 5th in the Holden Horseshoe he was sold to Dubai for 2.5m
I will never forget the absolute joy and excitement of owning a wonderful horse like him that had a heart the size of the moon, he just would not give up.......
