1980 Castle Tankard, Salisbury.

But I'm at Ascot racecourse, Bulawayo, on the Thursday before, for a card-call on that Tankard. As a skinny kid I outbid the mayor of Bulawayo for Strike It Rich. I can still remember to this day, the Mayor turning around and looking at me as if to say who's this skinny kid. The pool was guaranteed at R1000 and I "bought" Strike It Rich for R100. On the Saturday, he was backed into 7/2 and came home smoking... - Relatively speaking, still the best win I have ever had.

(Strike It Rich subsequently downed Foveros in the only Omega Gold at Turfies)

Muhti, he wasn't anything to look at as a yearling & neither was his 5 time winning half sister, Zilli, which my trainer would not buy for 20k

Why Qs aren't always bad!
Back in the days before telephone and internet betting, we used to take our bets at the totes. Man I hated the q's. my 1st job was as an internal auditor and my senior partner used to let me take my pa at the tote en route to wherever. This particular day I played a R4 pa perm (last of the big spenders). On returning to the car, he says to me, he is feeling lucky, so could I please go back and take the same bet for him. Having a passionate hatred of q's I "generously" suggest he takes half of mine for R2. Long story short, the pa arrives and WE collect R8k! Boy, did I wish I had returned to that Q!
Funny enough, some 15 years later, I take a r300 pa on my phone. The boss and friend and keen punter himself, hears me placing my bet and asks that I take the same bet for him. Again, being the lazy bastard I am, I say, take half. HALF of R20k it turned out!

Many moons ago my wife arrived with our kids at my office, being busy I was a bit cheesed. I put them in front of the TV to watch some kiddies program. The presenter was going on about some date in history where something major happened. Cant remember exactly the date but it was something like 1592. Nice numbers for a quart I thought. Racing was at Bloemfontein that day. Picked up the phone and asked for the quart in the next race boxed 1592 for the remainder of my balance. Not having used my acc for sometime I didnt realise there was R100 in it. Bet placed 4.25 times I thought what a waste. Phoned in for the results and to my surprise the numbers came up !! Smiles all round until I phoned in for my balance R21 000. Quart paid R53?? Well needless to say I closed the office early and stopped at the local tote on the way home. Yay nappies for a year !!
