Some you win
11 years 6 months ago
It was during 1975. I have just completed my military service and was working for Makro Wholesalers, situated against the hill, on the border of Edenvale and Germiston.
I punted small every Saturday. I won small amounts and soon the bug bit most of the workers in Makro. One Saturday morning I collected all bets as usual. An Indian fellow gave me 50c (that was the minimum bet those days) to play a jackpot. I was to choose the numbers.
The manager, who punted as well, gave me an hour to get back. So off I went in my old jalopy. Up Fishers hill. In Primrose I stopped at a traffic light. Next to me, to my right, a beautiful blonde in a Merc Sports was looking in my direction. I simulated a kiss at her. She smiled, waved at me and turned to the right. I caught a glimpse of her number plate, 8959.
At the Germiston Tab I wrote out all the tickets. Then I remembered my Indian friends’ 50c. I filled in his jackpot, 50c, 8959.
Back at Makro we listened on the radio for the results. The first leg no 8 arrived, the second leg no 9 arrived, the third leg no 5 arrived, at this stage most tickets have found the bin. Looking at the results, the image of the blonde and Merc sports came back to me. I got hold of the Indian colleague and with a few extra chaps we waited for the results. A loud cheer went up when the 9 was announced as the winner. After all these years it still feels unreal to me.
The jackpot paid R18 000 something. I received 10% from the colleague (without even asking). This resulted in me buying a brand-new Fiat 125S, 5 speed.
The Indian chap bought 4 Kombi’s and started a commuter business from Actonville, Benoni to Makro

Magic story
When I was a bookie in the tats in Bosman st, when they changed the result of the July and gave it to Space Walk, the difference to me was huge, so from making a big loss to a big profit and was able to put in an entertainment area and pool, cash !
I try to forget about the many losses, but will always remember that half an hour sitting and praying in the toilet.
Lol

It was couple years ago on gold cup day, was down a few grand and it was time for the main race , I was very confident on equal image winning that day. I remember equal image and desert links were joint favourites before the off so I went down to the bookies. I remember seeing 7-2 equal image and 4- 1 desert links so I told the bookie thousand on the top one. Walked back to the grandstand watch desert links under Greg Cheyne win a cracker and equal image run like crap. I have a habit of always looking at my tickets before I tear it and what do you know , they gave me 4000 to a 1000 desert links.
